GRADING PROCEDURES

STANDARDS BASED GRADE BREAKDOWN
Standard / Percent of Grade / Approximate Duration of Instruction^
CHARACTERISTICS OF SCIENCE (SCSH1-7)This is an ongoing standard throughout the semester.
Habits of Mind Inquiry, Research, Analysis, Reporting Information
Nature of ScienceScientific Method, Vocabulary development, Reading / † 5% / ~6 days
BIOLOGY CONTENT STANDARDS
SB1 ~ Cells Water, homeostasis, Macromolecules, pH, enzymes, Structure & Function of Cell Organelles / † ‡13% / ~10 days
SB2 ~ Genetics Cell Division, Comparison of DNA & RNA, Mendel's laws, Human Genetics, Mutations, Reproduction and Biotechnology / † ‡19% / ~18 days
SB3 ~ Organisms Energy Transformation, Classification, Systems / † ‡11% / ~10 days
SB4 ~ EcologyNutrient Cycles, Biomes, tropism, Succession, Human Impact / † ‡19% / ~6 days
SB5 ~ Evolution Timeline, mechanism, & evidence for the theory / † ‡13% / ~8 days
Mid-term Exam mid semester covering content that has already been covered / † ‡5% / N/A
*EOCT – End-Of-Course Test Statewide standardized test taken by all Biology students in Georgia / *20% / 2 days
^Pacing is for instruction time only and does not take into account review and student assessment. Pacing of content is subject to change based on the needs of the students and changes to the school calendar.
†Task points within these categories will vary according to the difficulty, rigor and length of the assignment. Summative assessments will be given a weight of 2, labs/lab quizzes will be given a weight of 1.5, note checkpoints will be given a weight of 0.5 and all other assignments will be given a weight of 1.
‡Percentage values determine based on the course timeline set forth by the GA DOE.
*Percentage value set by CCSD. Any student entering high school in years 2008-2011 will have an EOCT percent of 15%. This decrease in the EOCT weight will be compensated by a 5% final exam.

Standards will be addressed in the following order: SB1, SB2, SB5, SB3, SB4.

COBB COUNTY GRADING SCALE
100%-90 / A
89%-80% / B
79%-74% / C
73%-70% / D
69% and below / F
STANDARDS BASED GRADEBOOK: The grade book will look different from what you may be used to but will still incorporate the standard formative and summative assessment tools from the past. Under each standard there will be daily assignments, labs, activities, quizzes, and tests. The advantage of this new model is that each student can easily determine strengths and weaknesses in their understanding of a subject. It also balances the curriculum so that no one area of the subject is given more emphasis than the state standards dictate. Grades may fluctuate at the start of a unit because few assignments will be heavily weighted to start.

Basic Rules:

  1. Be respectful. If I am talking, you should not be talking or walking around the room.
  2. Remain in your desk until the bell rings. Wait for the teacher to dismiss you.
  3. No profanity
  4. Treat each other with respect
  5. Be alert, engaged, and a positive contribution to class.

** Any violation of the above rules will result in strong consequences approved by administration.

Discipline Policy:

1st Offense- verbal warning

2nd Offense- student-teacher coaching

3rd Offense - detention and call to parent

4thOffense- discipline referral and call to parent

Important Information to ensure your success!

  • Please do not use colored ink on assignments- blue, black, or pencil is acceptable.
  • Name, date, and class period should be on all assignments.
  • Quizzes may be announced or unannounced.
  • All tests are cumulative.

Tests: The tests may include material covered in assigned readings, notes, homework, labs, and class discussions. There will be a test at the end of every unit. The average test window is every 5-10 days. Make-up tests will need to be scheduled during one of the offered tutoring sessions or set by appointment.

Do Over Policy:

“Do Over” Policy

  • The “Do Over” is a reassessment where re-teaching, practice, and tutoring must be completed to be able to re-assess

In order for the student to take advantage of the “Do Over” to improve a majorassessment, the following requirements must be met:

  • Attempt the original assessment
  • Prepare for and attend 2 tutoring sessions with their teacher
  • Complete all assignments that support the instruction prior to the initial assessment
  • Participate in the second offering of the assessment to have the opportunity to replace a grade with a maximum of a 100.

(Students will receive the higher of the two grades up to a 74.)

  • Timeline: The “Do Over” time frame is 5 school days from the date the assessment was returned to the class.
  • The second assessment will be the same format as the original assessment but a different version. (example- multi-choice format, or essay format)

Daily Work: will include class work, homework, warm up work, and enrichment activities. Some form of homework (Including tutorial videos) will be assigned daily. You are responsible for completing this and being prepared for discussions. All homework is due at the beginning of class in order to receive credit.

Makeup work: Any work missed must be made up by the same amount of days missed + one day. If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to find out what was covered. You may ask a classmate or look at the daily work book. Any materials that you need can be found in the assignment crate. If you miss a test or quiz, please discuss a time that this can be made up. If you miss a lab, you will need to get an alternate assignment from us. The assignment will cover the same topic as the missed lab and the length will vary depending on the extent of the lab. It is your responsibility to complete make-up work. Assignments turned in after the instructor has gone over the answers in class will not be accepted.

Major projects will be assigned well in advance. If you are going to be absent (excused or unexcused) the day the project is due, you must make arrangements to get your project to school.A letter grade will be deducted for every day your project is late up to three days. After three days, you will receive a zero. Some of our major projects will consist of group work. Please remember that your group is counting on your presence and that you have completed your portion. If you find that you are going to be absent, for a group project, please email us (teacher and partner) and let us know.

Signing below gives permission for the teacher to showcase all work including (photographs and videos) completed for the class via internet or any other educational medium.

Tardiness: Tardiness will not be tolerated. You are expected to be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings. It is very important that you get to class on time and come prepared. If you are tardy to class, you will need to go to the attendancecheck-in and bring the slip to class. Please try to limit leaving the classroom only for emergencies.

No Chewing gum, No Cell Phones or electronic devices, No food in class (unless directed by the teacher).

Honor Code: Cheating, in any form, will not be tolerated. All students involved will receive a zeroand the parents will be notified. Please realize that this includes class work, homework, and lab reports. Often times you may collect lab data in a group but you should write your own analysis and answers to the questions.

Be on Time, Be Prepared, Be Respectful, and Be Accountable.

***Donations of liquid soap, tissues, paper towels, and disinfectant spray would be greatly appreciated.

Weare very excited about working with you and we hope that this will be a very enjoyable year. It is our hope that you have fun and learn a lot about the world around you. Anything that we can do to help you be successful, we will gladly do.
