What’s New In May
Since the last version of The Dobie Digest(4/1/08), MWDR hasaccepted5 dogs into the program – Gina, Abbie, Roxie, Missy and Taz. Diva, who was placed in April, also came back. Nicki, who has been in her owner’s home, will be coming in this week. Rusty is also available for adoption and is currently being fostered in Springfield.Doberkids still looking for homes:
Brody, a handsome 2yo Blue/Rust doberboy is still patiently waiting for his forever home. MWDR rescued Brody from an Animal Control in Barnhardt, MO. We can’t understand why no one claimed Brody. He is housebroken, crate trained, and gets along well with people and other dogs. Won’t you consider relieving Brody of his blues?
Cowboy, a strapping 4yo Black/Tan doberguy has made a full recovery from his heartworm treatment and is now awaiting his forever home. Housebroken and crate trained, Cowboy doesn’t jump up on the furniture and is eager to please. He is food aggressive with other dogs. Won’t you let Cowboy lasso your heart?
Nobody is more deserving of their forever family than 5yo Red/Rust Dallas. A laid-back dober-gent, Dallas is content to spend his day on his bed gazing out the window and dreaming of his forever family. Dallas spent month after month being a true gentleman at MWDR’s monthly Petco Adoption Events, only to be brushed aside for newer, younger doberkids. He finally caught a break and found a family who adopted him and was good to him for 15 months, only to return him to rescue when they had a baby. Once you meet dear Dallas, you will realize what a wonderful companion he is. Won’t you save Dallas from his “lone-star” state of mind?
Diva is truly a goddess of a girl. At 8 years young, this Red/Rust often has the energy and personality of a much younger girl. She is fun and spunky at times and loves to run in the yard. But she is just as content to spend a quiet evening at home with her head in your lap. This special girl deserves a special family. Kody is a 2yo Red/Rust character. He seems to know how cute he is, and never fails to flash a big dober-smile. Kodyloves to give hugs and loves to play with his toys. A big, goofy dober-boy, Kodyhas learned lots from his foster mom and is ready to go to his forever home. The name Kodymeans “helpful”. Won’t you let Kodyfulfill his dober-duties and be a helpful friend and companion for you?
Penny is a 2yo Red/Rust stunning girl with lots of love to give. Her demodex mange keeps turning up like a bad penny. Penny is currently receiving medications for her mange, which is not contagious but usually caused by stress. Won’t you help this stressed out girl relax by giving her a forever home?
Ruckus is a 4yo Black/Tan guy with a wonderfully curious personality. He loves meeting new people and dogs. MWDR rescued from a high-kill shelter in Wichita, Kansas. Now that he’s out of doggie jail, won’t you let Ruckus steal your affections?
Meet the newest members of the pack:
Gina, a pretty 5yo Red/Rust cropped/docked girl, was surrendered by her family because she was chasing people walking by her yard or riding by on bicycles. This unwanted behavior is easily corrected with a fenced yard. Gina has no other behavior problems. She is housebroken and crate trained, loves people, gets along with other dogs and is well mannered. Her owners no longer wanted to care for her while we helped them find her a new home so she is now in foster care with MWDR.
Abbie,a sleek Black/Tan cropped/docked female, was also an owner turn-in. Her family no longer wanted this 22 month old beauty because she was barking for no reason. The husband felt he could no longer control her. We have found that Abbie barks to alert (which nearly all Dobermans do; they are watchdogs by nature). A calm “Shhhhh” lets her know everything’s ok and she immediately stops and gets praised. We have not encountered any behavior problems with Abbie. She is eager to please, knows basic obedience, is housebroken and crate trained, walks well on a leash, loves people, dogs and kids, and already impressed a new family with her sweet nature.
Roxie, a sweet 3-5yo Fawn/Rust cropped/docked lady, was sent to MWDR from a rescue group inexperienced with Dobermans. They were nervous about her von Willebrand’s Disease (vWD). vWD is a bleeding disorder in the Doberman which causes blood to not clot properly. It causes no pain and does not affect the life expectancy of the dog. A dog with vWD should receive veterinary care immediately for any bleeding wound and unnecessary surgery should be avoided. Roxie is a beautiful fawn Dobergirl and is settling in very nicely with her new foster family. She’s settling in so well, in fact, that they may just keep her so we’ve taken her off the website for now.
Missy came to MWDR from a shelter in Arkansas. She spent six long months there and is happy to be out of doggie jail and in foster care. Missy came in rather undernourished and we are working on getting her to a normal weight. She was heartworm positive but treated by she arrived here. MWDR had this pretty girl spayed and she also had a dental. So she’s ready to flash her pearly whites and earn herself a nice new family.
MWDR was asked to take Taz from a rescue group inexperienced with the Doberman breed. They had placed Taz with a family who did not have a fenced yard. They found this young guy’s energy level was too much for them and their 3 year old son. They tried to return him to the rescue group, but his previous “rescuers” did not want him back. MWDR was full, but there was talk of euthanizing him. So, MWDR stepped up to the plate and saved this pup from certain death. We will be sure to place him with a family who understands thetraining needs of a puppy so he doesn’t ever find himself in dire straits again. At 10 months old, he’s now the baby of our family. His foster family describes this floppy-eared guy as a big, silly oaf and named him Taz as in “Tasmanian devil”.
Only 2 dogs were placed with their forever family since April 1st– Rowdy, Abbie, (and possibly Roxie).
You may remember seeing Rebel on the website and in last month’s newsletter. He was at the Humane Society in West Memphis, AR waiting for one of our foster homes to open up. We are happy to report that he was adopted in Arkansas and did not have to be transported here.
Alex was also listed on our website as a courtesy to her family who needed to re-home her. She wasn’t doing as well with their toddler as they had hoped – these big dogs don’t know they’re big and have a tendency to knock down unsteady toddlers. Not only that, but Alex was playing way too rough with the baby. Her mom was very sad to see Alex go, but she had to put her human baby first. Happily, Alex found a new family that was a better fit without having to be placed in foster care.
Blast From the Past
Hi there! I’m Joel. I just wanted to say “hi” to all my friends at MWDR. I was living way down in Arkansas and found myself homeless just before Christmas. Everyone said how sad it was that an “old soul” like me had found himself in such a predicament. Even though MWDR was full, they were going to rescue me.A nice lady named Nancy in Springfield, MO said she would foster me for MWDR. She is a temporary foster home for MWDR and had adopted Gussie from them in August 2006. Well, I guess I impressed her with my good looks and charm because she decided to keep me! I just wanted to say “hi” from down here in southern MO – if it weren’t for MWDR, I might not have been around to spend Christmas with my new forever family (gulp!)

My name is Baron and I just wanted to poke my head in from behind the scenes and say hi. Many of you are aware of all the Dobies MWDR takes into foster care and brings out to adoption events to pair up with families. But you may not know that for every dog MWDR takes in, there are others of us out there that have been helped by them. My case is one of those. I found myself at the pound in Buffalo, MO. I was nearly starved to death by my former owner. The pound is an outside-only facility and I was freezing in this cold, wet weather in my tiny pen. To top it all off, I got a nasty skin infection! I was about to give up on you humans.But… a sweet volunteer came to visit every day with warm, dry bedding and treats for us. She contacted MWDR to see if they could take me in. She was worried I wasn’t going to make it because I was so skinny and not eating. But she was encouraged by my playful spirit and sweet nature. MWDR was full and could not take me in, but they didn’t just tell her no and go about their business. They contacted other Doberman rescues until they found one to take me in and helped arrange my transport. I am on my way to Nebraska. I guess that’s pretty far to go, but if it means I’m on my way to a warm inside home, good food and medical attention, then I am all for it. I just wanted to say thanks and remind everyone that MWDR helps lots of Dobies, not just the ones you see on their website. There is always a waiting list of poor souls like me trying to get in, so Paws crossed that you find some new foster families soon.

Visit Petsmart’s large outside adoption event. Take home a new companion today!
May 4, 2008 – Bully Bash – 10am-4pm at Dusable Park, St. Charles
This annual event is designed to educate the public about various bully breeds. There will be several rescue groups and vendors attending, including MWDR. Bring your dog (on a 6ft leash or less) and your family – there are games for kids, games for dogs, and merchandise for purchase. Bring that extra cash you have lying around – proceeds go to various not-for-profit rescue organizations.
May 18, 2008 – Pet Fest ’08 – 1pm-4pm at Airedale Antics, Maplewood
MWDR is sponsoring Pet Fest ‘08, which is a “Rally to Rescue” event. In addition to MWDR, ten other rescue groups will be in attendance. There will also be several vendors. Our featured guest is a pet psychic. Come on out and meet some adoptable dogs, purchase pet items and perhaps learn a thing or two about man’s best friend.

May 24, 2008 – Fundraiser BBQ – 11am-5pm at Frontier IGA, St. Charles
Have lunch or dinner with us at our annual fundraiser barbeque! Menus in the past have included chicken, hot dogs, bratwurst and pork steak dinners with coleslaw, baked beans, chips, cookies, soda and water. All proceeds go to Midwest Doberman Rescue and Boxer Rescue to help cover vet bills and other expenses for rescue dogs in our programs. Due to health regulations, this is a dog-free event.
May 31, 2008 – Dog Days of Summer – 11am-5pm on Main St, St. Charles
R.T. Weilers is hosting their 4th Annual Dog Days of Summer on Main Festival. There will be 25 pet related business/adoption agencies and shelters. This event will be in the 100-200 blocks of Main Street. There will be a Beach Wear Competition at 1 pm. Dress your dog in his/her favorite beach attire and let them strut their stuff. There is a dog and owner limbo competition at 5:00. There will be live bands from 12:00 - 5:00. And there will be a Kiddie Korner with activities for the human kids. Please stop by and see some of our great adoptable Dobermans.
Spread the word! Feel free to print out our flyers or list of adoption events and post them (with permission, of course) at your local veterinary clinic, pet store, etc. The more the merrier at our events!
Look Who Found Their Forever Family
Hey, guess what? I found my forever home! I didn’t have too long of a stint with Dobie rescue – just six weeks or so. At the time, I was the baby of the bunch – just a year old. Young and wild, I was eager to find my forever family after my first family had to part with me when they moved.My new family spotted me at one of our adoption events at Airedale Antics and man did they love me. They were warned about how young I was and that I’d need to learn some manners.
Well it turns out that when I’m the only dog I am very well behaved. One of my foster moms said I was never, ever a bad boy for her – I think the phrase she used was “high maintenance”. I’m just a typical one year old full-of-himself Doberboy. My new family says the name Rowdy doesn’t even fit because I’m very calm, cool and collected now. I’m very much a cuddler. I walk over to my crate whenever I’m sleepy. I also like to walk the perimeter of my new house and yard just to make sure everything’s safe and sound. My new family said they couldn’t ask for a better dog. They named me Anpu, after the ancient Egyptian God of Lost Souls. Check out his picture. My family thinks I’m a god - how cool is that?!

Hey Dobie Rescue friends! Thanks for finding me my forever home too! Well, I wasn’t with you guys for very long, but I made close friends with my foster families in that short time. I sure love my people! After you guys took me in, one of your previous adopters called needing a sister for their two year old Dobergirl.
We met at the pet store to see if we would get along – I’d heard what an alpha dog she could be and we all thought she might not accept me in her family. Well, it turned out to be the opposite. I showed her I can hold my own! We played and played and played in the yard after the pet store meeting went well. My new family was a little surprised at how crazy we dainty Dobergirls play. I love my new sister and am settling in very nicely with my new family. They are even going to take me to doggie daycare once a week so we don’t get bored while they are at work. Can you say SPOILED?!
