The appointment is made to the academy rather than any individual area and duties may be required outside the usual day-to-day work. All personnel are expected to work flexibly as part of a team of Teaching and Support Staff, commonly bound in the service of the needs of the school and the further development of St. Edmund’s as reasonably required under the direction of the Principal.

PURPOSE OF POST: / Curriculum Leaders are key members of the academy Middle Leaders’ Team, and have a pivotal role in planning and implementing the future development and success of the academy. They are expected to support fully the academy’s mission and aims through striving to develop a learning culture within the subject area which results in the creation of a climate of continuous self-review, the sharing of good practice and constant improvement both in terms of learner progress and achievement. A curriculum leader is expected to stimulate, inspire and develop staff to perform to the best of their ability by promoting high quality teaching and learning. Innovation should be encouraged within a reflective framework, underpinned by the principles of classroom-based enquiry to improve the learning outcomes of pupils and students.
As a Curriculum Leader you should lead by example in your classroom leadership and management practice, and be proactive in the pursuit of professional development opportunities to advance your skills to promote high quality teaching and learning throughout your subject area.
The progress and achievement of all learners should be a particular focus for you at all times.

Responsibilities and Duties

The post holder is expected to undertake the professional duties of a schoolteacher within the conditions operative at the time of issue of this Job Description together with the more specific duties / responsibilities which are listed below. These should not include or imply any voluntary activities.

Amendment of Job Description

The particular duties/responsibilities listed overleaf may be reviewed from time to time at the request of the Principal or post holder as circumstances make necessary. They may be amended only after reasonable consultation and the approval of St Edmund’s Academy Committee. In the exceptional situation of mutual agreement not being achieved, the individual teacher or the Principal will have access to an Appeal Committee established by the Representatives’ Quality and Performance Working Group for the purpose.

The following outline is not intended as a list of tasks, but gives an overall range of duties and managerial responsibilities which reflects the position.

  1. To lead and be accountable for the development of a stimulating and engaging approach to subject delivery which encourages all pupils and students to make at least good progress in their learning, recognising their personalised learning needs.
  2. To develop an ethos of continuous professional development resulting in high quality teaching and learning throughout the subject area(s).
  3. To work collaboratively with other curriculum leaders at St Edmund’s, with Bishop Cleary Catholic MAC Primaries and with post-16 partners to identify and share good practice.
  4. To manage the subject area efficiently to ensure that effective systems are established, in line with whole school systems, for the collection and use of appropriate data to inform target setting for students and to prioritise work in the subject area.
  5. To promote the use of ICT throughout the subject area to enhance teaching and learning.
  6. To ensure that high quality systems are in place to meet the requirements of internal and external inspections.
  7. To provide a positive and effective response to new local and national initiatives.
  8. To be responsible for the efficient deployment of Learning Support Assistants in supporting curriculum delivery and learner progress, especially where learners are entitled to pupil premium and catch-up funding.
  9. To identify effective teaching and learning approaches and ensure that staff incorporate them in curriculum delivery and share with colleagues as appropriate.
  10. To administer an effective approach towards continuous professional development to ensure that colleagues are set clear targets and supported in their attainment. Identify appropriate methods including INSET, peer support, observations, individual discussions with staff so that staff knowledge and skills are extended at every opportunity.
  11. To establish a systematic approach to the evaluation of the work of the subject area to include the sampling of students’ work, discussion with students and the review of assessments and reports to ensure high standards and a consistent approach.
  12. To establish rigorous systems for the completion of appropriate homework and coursework tasks.
  13. To hold regular meetings with subject colleagues and plan priorities collaboratively, agree targets for raising standards, improving achievement and sharing good practice and to ensure that the minutes of those meetings are shared with the Leadership Team.
  14. To establish a systematic approach to the collection of data on student progress and attainment and use the information to identify under performance or trends causing concern and identify and implement strategies to address those issues.
  15. To ensure a systematic approach to monitoring student progress, celebrating achievement and reporting to parents.
  16. To attend Middle Leader and Progress (COBRA) meetings to represent the subject area and work with other colleagues to identify whole school priorities and strategies to support them.
  17. To be responsible for the maintenance of good behaviour throughout the subject area supporting colleagues as necessary in line with the academy’s Behaviour Management Policy (CARE).
  18. To liaise with colleagues as necessary to assist with timetable planning and deployment of staff, management of student teachers and the induction of new members of the team.
  19. To work in collaboration with the Examinations Officer to support student entry to external examinations.
  20. To work in collaboration with BCC MAC Business Director to ensure effective budgetary and stock control.
  21. To review the curriculum within the requirements of the National Curriculum including recognition of Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education, Literacy & Numeracy, to ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
  22. To maintain documentary evidence as required for internal review and external inspections.
  23. To adhere to all school policies and the ethos of student and parental engagement as appropriate (With due regard for The Voice of the Learner / Parent / Staff as required).
  24. To be responsible for health and safety in the curriculum area(s), reporting any concerns, as appropriate, to BCC MAC Business Director or, in her absence, to the Principal of St Edmund’s.
  25. To report areas of concern and success as appropriate to the appropriate member of the Leadership Team with line management responsibilities and the Principal.

To undertake all duties reasonably requested in a manner consistent with the aims of St. Edmund’s as a Catholic Academy.
