1. OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB

With a view to advancing BirdLife International’s global conservation programmes:
  • Advisor to respective Programme Managers of the BirdLife Secretariat’s Rio Tinto, CEMEX andHeidelbergCement partnerships
  • Brokering and development of new global business and biodiversity relationships and partnerships with other corporates of value to BirdLife International
  • Provisionof ‘Working with Corporates’advice and guidance/support in the development of additional relationships between regional secretariat and/or Partners and the private sector both regionally and nationally

PRINCIPAL STAFF RELATIONSHIPS/RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN SECRETARIAT
Rio Tinto-BirdLife Programme Manager; CEMEX – BirdLife Partnership Manager; technical oversight of the BirdLife – HeidelbergCement Partnership Manager.
Conservation Programmes staff, Regional Secretariat staff, other members of the BirdLife Secretariat in Cambridge and in particular with relevant Global Directors, CEO, Regional Directors and their teams. This post will need to work closely with all levels of BirdLife Secretariat staff globallywith the aim of encouraging, supporting and advising onpartnership development and maintenance with the private sector.
PRINCIPAL STAFFRELATIONSHIPS/RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN BIRDLIFE NETWORK
To work with high level BirdLife Partner staff and their teams in the provision of advice and where relevant, the brokering, development and implementation of collaborative business and biodiversity relationships (in liaison with and with the endorsement of Regional Directors).

3. KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

To work with high level management staff within Rio Tinto, CEMEX and HeidelbergCement both at the global Corporate and Business Unit levels in order to cultivate partnership values and develop and implement common biodiversity objectives.

To engage with key staff from companies where BirdLife is interested in developing new strategic relationships with business.

To engage with other stakeholders who have an interest in the development and management of business and biodiversity partnerships from other sectors, such as companies, development banks, governments, and consultants, so as to facilitate further partnership development between BirdLife, companies and these sectors.

4. MAIN DUTIES/WORK PROGRAMME RESPONSIBILITIES

By main work area:
GENERAL DUTIES
  • To develop new relationships with corporates of strategic value to BirdLife, with a view to expanding BirdLife’s portfolio of business and biodiversity partnerships, at global, regional and where appropriate, national levels.
  • To oversee and advise on the management of the respective Programme Managers for the established strategic partnerships with corporate partners.
  • To work with the Secretariat to develop and implement a strategy for wider engagement with the corporate sector, using the Working with Corporates guidance as a key reference.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
  1. To oversee and provide advice to the Rio Tinto – BirdLife Programme Manager in the execution of his/her duties.
  2. To oversee and provide advice to manage the CEMEX – BirdLife Programme Manager in the execution of his/her duties.
  3. To assist with the management of the BirdLife –HeidelbergCement Programme.
  4. To liaise with key BirdLife staff to ensure external profile of the CEMEX and HeidelbergCement programmes is fairly balanced and a joined-up approach to partnership management is maintained at both the European and Global level.
  5. As and when appropriateengage with relevant staff within these respective companies at Partnership and Steering committee meetings and other events/opportunities for managing and progressing such partnerships.
  6. To work with specialists/experts within the BirdLife Secretariat and partnership in the provision of advice to partner companies in implementing and embedding their respective biodiversity strategies.
  7. With reference to BirdLife’s global conservation programmes, workcooperatively alongside the respective Programme Managers to identify, develop and drive implementation of conservation projects associated with company operations, and facilitate links between BirdLife Partner NGOs, company operations and other appropriate stakeholders to address priority conservation needs.
  8. To work with the above companies to develop and execute elements of their respective communications strategies to promote the partnership to both internal and external stakeholders.
  9. To work with others in the BirdLife Secretariat to scope and identify other prospective strategic partners in new sectors of business and biodiversity engagement, and to initiate engagement with a view to the brokering of such partnerships.To advise on and where possible handle incoming enquiries and interest by the business sector in working with BirdLife; make sound assessments of potential opportunities for either funding or strategic engagement.
  10. To develop a coherent strategy for BirdLife’s engagement with business.
  11. Where feasible and appropriate to provide specific Working with Corporates guidance to the Secretariat and to BirdLife Partners.
  12. To seek and attend opportunities to promote BirdLife’s corporate partnerships through industry, governmental and NGO networks and events.

6. EDUCATION/SKILLS AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

REQUIREMENTS / KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES
Minimum General Education / Educated to at least graduate level.
Job Specific Education/Qualification / Degree in relevant environmental subject: Biological Sciences and/or nature conservation or related field.
Job Specific Knowledge / Good general knowledge ofglobal biodiversity conservation and specific knowledge of the risks business pose to the environment and the opportunities that arise. A dedication to developing and brokering cross-sector partnerships that are underpinned by ensuring that biodiversity conservation outcomes are embedded in such relationships; a sympathy and skill for working with the corporate sector in a critical but positively productive manner.
Experience / At least 5 yearspost-graduate work experience in an environmental or conservation field, with experience of working with the corporate sector, ideally with some of that being outside of native country.Experience of proposal development, project management, partnership brokering and budget management.
Management & organisational skills / Long-term multi-project management skills.
Management and Advisory skills as well as an ability to remotely manage staff and teams in the achievement of their specific projects. A diplomatic but outgoing and confident and committed personality able to enthuse and convince doubters on both sides about the opportunities for biodiversity conservation in the extractives sector specifically and corporate sector generally. A capacity to resolve potential conflicts.
Communications skills / Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing.
Creativity & Initiative / Anindividual with the dedication and vision to continue meeting the ongoing challengesof developing and maintaining a successful and diverse partnership programme.
Computer Literacy / General contemporary: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.

An interest in birds and bird conservation.
An understanding of the business case and drivers for conservation of biodiversity.
Relevant postgraduate qualifications, particularly in the field of cross-sector partnership brokering, development and management.
