This is a beginner’s course designed to introduce the beautiful French language. Through fun and engaging activities, participants will be able to have basic conversations and explore French for personal use beyond the classroom.

Wordifference Workshop

Wed – April 2 and April 9 (2 week class) 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

H. Evrard – Rm 223

“Words have power” this workshop teaches how to apply positive words to everyday situations in a practical way. The secret is in the word’s very nature, and select words are explored so you can use them in a new way. We will also cover concepts found in various skills for self-improvement, such as dream boards, affirmations, expressive writing, meditation, and more. Dr. Evrard authored a book of positive words and speaks on using words for healing and personal change.

Computer Literacy

What is a Living Trust and is it right for you? Do I need a Living Trust to avoid Probate? Is Probate lengthy and expensive? Why won’t a Will be sufficient by itself? This class will teach the basics of copper foil method of stained glass and to work with patterns, cut glass, grind and solder. The art of etching and mosaics will also be discussed. You will complete at least one project at the end of the five weeks. Material cost of $35 is payable to the instructor at the first session.

Getting paid to talk, making money with your voice is a single evening class that takes a realistic and entertaining look at the positive and negative components of building success as a voice actor. Breathing and the Nervous System

The breath is where everything begins. Connection with the breath is the backbone of any yoga practice and may be the most important gift that you can give yourself. There are many ways to use the breath, and breath can be a bridge between the body and mind. Breathing techniques can cleanse, clam, strengthen, and tone the nervous system, and thus increase vitality. They are commonly used for anxiety management techniques and may be used as a tool to cultivate greater mental control over our emotions and our reactions to them. Join Suzanne and explore some of the breathing techniques known as pranayama in the practices of yoga. Fee: $30 Seniors: $15

Admission

Classes are open to all area residents seventeenyears of ago or older who are no longer in school. All classes are held at the high school, unless otherwise noted in the course description. While non-residents are welcome to enroll, Newington residents will be honored first when class size limit has been reached. Classes will begin the week of March 3, 2014.

Registration

Walk-In registration for all classes will be held in the Newington High School cafeteria on the following nights between 6:30 – 8:00 pmMonday, February 24 and Tuesday, February 25, 2014.

Inclement Weather

Adult Education classes are automatically cancelled whenever regular school classes are cancelled. In the event Adult Education classes are cancelled and regular school classes are held, an announcement will be made on WVIT Channel 30 and Channel 3.

Fees

Course fees vary depending on the length and nature of the course. Materials and textbooks needed for each course are extra, unless otherwise stated in the course description. Senior citizens (62- years) are entitled to a 50% reduction in course fees. Non-residents will be charged an additional $10.00. No fees are charged for textbooks or materials used in the Mandated Program areas.

Payment and Refund Policy

Registration is complete and guaranteed only upon payment. Checks are to be made out to Newington Education Fund. Fees for the Adult Education courses will be returned if a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. No refunds will be made after classes have begun.

The GED Test

What is the GED? The General Education Development test program is a method of obtaining a high school equivalency diploma for Connecticut adults. To prepare for the test, you may enter the program at age 17. To take the test:

  1. A person 17 years of age or older may register if officially withdrawn from school for 6 months or their ninth grade class has graduated. Proof of age and official letter of withdrawal are required.
  2. Social Security Number and Photo ID are required.
  3. If 21 or over, a fee of $13 is required.
  4. The GED Test is computer based as of January 1, 2014. Students can begin the GED registration process online at ged.com and complete the process in person at the Newington Adult Education Office, Newington High School, 605 Willard Avenue, Room 113.
  5. Accommodations on the GED Test are available for individuals with a documented disability. High School Diploma Program (CDP)
The Newington Public Schools operates an Evening High School Diploma Program. Students enrolled in this program can earn credits toward completion of their high school education. Students must be 17-years of age or older in order to enroll in this program. Interested students should call the Adult Education Office at 860-667-5850 Monday through Thursday between the hours of 5:00 –8:00 p.m. for an interview.
