Chemistry in the Community Semester 2 Lab Practical Study Guide

1)Be able to write the definition of the following: Tyndall effect, aqueous solution, specific heat capacity, capillary tube, solubility and one substance from our lab which is soluble in water, physical property and one example, chemical property and one example, electronegativity and the element shown on P. 421 which is the most electronegative.

2)Be able to label the elements in the picture on P. 421 if they are NOT in color and no wording is listed!

3)Be able to describe an investigation from lab 4A.3 ( P. 396) which showed the following properties of water: cohesion, surface tension, “strange” solid vs. liquid density, polarity

4)If looking at the three mixtures from lab 4A.3 Investigation # 6, which one(s) is (are) a homogeneous mixture, heterogeneous mixture, suspension, colloid, and solution.

5)If looking at the following samples (labeled by name), be able to list if it is ionic or molecular and if it is soluble or insoluble in water: ethanol, hexane, urea, calcium carbonate, ammonium chloride.

6)Be able to pick out the instrument used to do the following: hold a test tube, hold a beaker, measure the volume of a liquid, measure the mass of a solid.

7)Be able to pick out the following: Erlenmeyer Flask, beaker, graduated cylinder, volumetric flask

8)Be able to list a numbered step of the writing of a lab for this class (there are 7 steps)

9)Know the lab rules from the paper you signed including the rules for breaking glass, what to do specifically if Ms. Curry yells “call 911”, if a fire starts on the clothing of a person or on the lab table, which chemicals you are allowed to smell, and of course, the most important direction.

10)Be able to list the correct name of the molecule from the ball and spring models of carbon dioxide, water, methane, and oxygen.

11)Know the freezing point and boiling point of water in Celsius and Kelvin

12)Be able to write what the following instruments are used for (they will not be labeled with names): hot plate, glass square, filter, watch glass, stirring rod, evaporating dish, crucible, test tube cleaner

13)I will give you the procedure for one of the following investigations (# 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8) from the 2A.1 lab on P. 152 and then you will need to tell me which property of gas is shown in that investigation.

I am listing the possible answers here but they will NOT appear on the test to choose from….each investigation shows a different property and these are NOT in order!

  • Air has mass
  • Temperature and volume are directly related
  • Air occupies space
  • Air exerts pressure in all direction
  • Pressure and Volume are inversely related
