Biology 11- Virus Presentation

Why? In order to develop an understanding of a variety of viruses and evaluate their impacts on various organisms.

Who? You or you in a group of no more than 3. There are no exceptions. Please also be aware that the larger the group, the larger the expectations that are required and expected. So groups of 3, need to push past the minimum expectations to receive a passing grade. During any type of presentation each person in the group is also expected to participate equally in the presentation. You are responsible for choosing any of your group members and responsible for any conflicts that may arise during the creation of this project. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS IN A GROUP!

How? Choice a virus presented below. Viruses are on a first come, first serve priority. For example, if you choose HIV, no one else in class will be able to research this virus. See Ms. Hamilton for the signup sheet. If your virus is not presented below check with Ms. Hamilton, it might be okay. Try to find information on your virus before you look into. Some viruses naturally have more information than others. Be warned that some come diseases are also caused by bacteria, and you must make sure that you are discussing factors caused by your VIRUS and not the bacteria.

  1. Bronchiolitis
  2. Chickenpox
  3. Common Cold
  4. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Infection
  5. Dengue Fever
  6. Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Infection
  7. Erythema Infectiosum
  8. Hantavirus Infection
  9. Hemorrhagic Fevers
  10. Herpes Simplex Virus Infections
  11. Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection
  12. Influenza
  13. Measles
  14. Mumps
  15. Polio
  16. Rabies
  17. Respiratory Tract Infections in Children
  18. Roseola Infantum
  19. Rotavirus Infection
  20. Rubella
  21. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
  22. Smallpox
  23. Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE)
  24. Yellow Fever

What? Choose one of the following projects, or make up your own (but please check with the teacher before proceeding). This should be totally original; no cutting, pasting, no copying other people's work. The theme of the project is to present how the virus gets inside the organism’s body, what cells/organs are involved, how the immune system fights it and who wins. There are also different perspectives that you can take for this project. You can be the virus, the organism that acquires the virus, or the medical doctor that tries to fight off the invading virus.

Format or presentation OPTIONS

·  Comic strip

·  Short story

·  Radio Play (group of 3)

·  Skit (group of 3)

·  Soap opera

·  Sports reporter (e.g. wrestling smack down)

·  News anchor describing a war

Point of view OPTIONS

You can use the following rubric to help direct your story

Information / Diary of a virus / Diary of a virus victim / Diary of a virus fighter
Name / Common and Latin / Name, age / Role in society:
Family doctor, epidemiologist, public health official, etc.
Transmission / How I get into a body; get around a body / How I was contaminated / Safety suggestions to avoid making contact with virus
Symptoms / Where and how I attack healthy tissue / How I suffered / What I can do to help the victim’s symptoms
Battle at the cellular level / Images of virus attacking healthy human cell / Images of infection / Counter attack – images, how medicines, treatments work
Travel through the body; Timeline / Travel diary, sights and sounds / How disease progresses in time / The infection evolves on a large scale in human populations
Weapons / Physical structure, designed for attack / Immune system, how it defends the body / Medicines & treatments

DON’T FORGET THE VIRUS FACTS!

Use the following heading to neatly gather information on your virus for evaluation on your project. You may also wish to visit the Best library webpage ( http://www.bestlibrary.org/virus/) under Hamilton or my SharePoint site to download the word document to make collecting and recording your information easier.

Topics / (to be marked for accuracy & quality)
Common name / scientific name of virus
Structure or image of your virus. You must describe the basic structure of your virus, including the antigens, the membranous envelope, the protein capsid, and what type of nucleic acid core it has. Feel free to attach a copy of your virus, but it must be labeled and explained by you.
How it tinkers with the human immune system. For example how did the virus get inside the affected organism? What cells are affected? This should not be a two sentence answer.
History: When did it start? How has it survived throughout history?
Geography; where in the world is it most common, most lethal, including the statistics
How does your virus spread; how fast it spread
Symptoms an infected person develops. Minimum of 3. Pretend you are a doctor. What symptoms would an organism develop that are unique to only your virus? You might need to research other viruses to make sure that, for example, sore throat isn’t used for only your virus. You MUST present symptoms that if you were describing them to a doctor they would go, Yes, they have this virus.
Organs it attacks in the human body. Be specific.
Danger factor: Describe any permanent damage or death that might occur due to infection with this virus
People most susceptible to the disease (e.g. old, young). Why some people get it and others stay healthy
Preventative methods of avoiding this infection. Be specific. You may mention obvious choices, but your methods should be linked to the specifics of your virus.
Treatment or cure. What can be done? Anything?
Interesting facts.

Evaluation:

1.  Virus facts sheet/essential scientific facts. Did you answer the questions as presented? Are you missing any information?

2.  Presentation (talks about viral specificity, structure of virus, body’s basic lines of defense against attack, ways to reduce the spread of virus, for example)

3.  Works Cited Sheet (must be attached or your project will not be marked.) Plagiarized projects, even tiny parts will receive a grade of zero. If you are not sure what this means please see Ms. Hamilton or Mrs. Comfort for more information. Below is the citation machine link to assist you with your work cited sheet. Instructions on how to use it are on the Best Library website.
