Jeffrey Freeman Hines is a native of New York. He attended Brown University in Providence, RI as part of the combined Seven-Year Medical Education Program. He received his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree from Brown in Biology, magna cum laude, in May 1983. Jeffrey was the recipient of a United States Army Health Professions Scholarship in 1982. Jeffrey received his medical degree from Brown University School of Medicine in May 1986.

Dr. Hines completed a four-year residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, Aurora, CO from July 1986 - June 1990. Following residency, Dr. Hines was assigned as an attending staff Obstetrician/Gynecologist at Darnall Army Community Hospital in Fort Hood, TX. In September 1990, Dr. Hines was deployed with the First Cavalry Division as a Battalion Surgeon during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. During his seven-month deployment, Dr. Hines cared for troops in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and occupied Iraq. While deployed, he researched the health care needs of deployed women which eventually resulted in two publications in peer review journals. He was the recipient of the Meritorious Unit Citation, an Army Commendation Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with two bronze service stars, the Saudi Arabia Kuwait Liberation Medal, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal. Dr. Hines returned to his practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Fort Hood in April 1991. In addition, he coordinated the departmental student-resident education program.

Dr. Hines completed a three-year fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Georgetown University Medical Center from July 1992 – June 1995. During his fellowship, Dr. Hines was extensively involved in the study of human papillomaviruses and in strategies for prophylactic cervical cancer vaccines.

Dr. Hines joined the attending staff of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX in July 1995. He served as an attending gynecologic oncologist and was the Assistant Chief for the Division of Gynecologic Oncology from July 1995 to June 2000. He also served as an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology for the Uniformed Services University for the Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD.

Dr. Hines is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology with special competence in Gynecologic Oncology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Hines is a Full Member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists. He is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the National Medical Association. Dr. Hines serves as a manuscript referee to several peer review medical journals to include Gynecologic Oncology, The Journal of the National Medical Association, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Hines is critically involved in collaborative clinical oncology research. He is a former institutional investigator for the Gynecologic Oncology Group and the Southwest Oncology Group. Dr. Hines is a past member of the Membership Committee for the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, a past member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Committee for the Gynecologic Oncology Group and a past member for the Government Relations committee for the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists. Dr. Hines has served on the continuing medical education committee for the American Society for Clinical Oncology and on the Program Committee for the 2013 Annual Meeting for the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.

Dr. Hines has extensive research interests, background, and is published in the field of papillomaviruses, cervical cancer vaccines, clinical cancer trials, disparities in healthcare, and undergraduate student education. He has presented his work at national and international meetings. He has been an invited lecturer to national venues as well as to India and Mexico in the field of papillomaviruses. Dr. Hines also has expertise in all aspects of the treatment of women with cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, vulvar cancer, endometrial cancer, and ovarian cancer. He is also actively involved in providing cancer health education lectures to at-risk groups.

Dr. Hines is the recipient of numerous local and national teaching awards for excellence in undergraduate and graduate medical education. He was the recipient of two awards by the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists and the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation for his research in papillomaviruses in 1994. Dr. Hines is also the recipient of the US Army Meritorious Service Medal. Dr. Hines was listed as one of Atlanta’s Top Doctors in the 2005 - 2017 editions of Atlanta Magazine. In November 2005, Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue nominated Dr. Hines to serve on the Governor’s Task Force for the Elimination of Cervical cancer for the State of Georgia.

In July 2000, Dr. Hines joined Southeastern Gynecologic Oncology, in Atlanta, GA, as an attending gynecologic oncologist. He is presently the lead gynecologic oncologist for Wellstar Health System. Dr. Hines is a Clinical Associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Morehouse School of Medicine and a Clinical Instructor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, at the Georgia Regents University School of Medicine.

Jeff previously served on the national advisory board for the Summerbridge Breakthrough Alumni Network. He is past president of the Board of Trustees for Fulton County’s Hammonds House Museum of African American Art and Resource Center. He serves as an emeritus trustee and is former vice chair for The Lovett School in Atlanta. He is a member of Leadership Atlanta Class of 2008. Jeffpreviously served as a member of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Regional Education Committee.He presently serves as a trustee on the Board of Directors for the Breakthrough Atlanta Collaborative. He is a former member of the board of trustees for the Brown University Medical Alumni Association. In July 2015, Jeff began a six year term as a Corporation trustee for Brown University.

Jeff is active with the education and missionary ministriesof his local church and has participated in medical mission trips to impoverished locations around the world to include Jamaica and the Philippines. Jeff is married to a pediatrician and is the father of two children and a proud grandfather. He spends much of his personal time researching and collecting African-American art and enjoys running marathons.
