Mr. Bill McGann currently works at the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center near Bluemont, Virginia, where he supports National Security Programs. Additional duties include serving as the facility Emergency Operations Centermanager and Air Operations officer. He joined the Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Operations Directorate in 2006 as an Operations specialist. His responsibilities included working in the Operations and Planning Sections of the National Response Coordination Center and at Joint Field Offices. In this role, he supported numerous disasters and emergencies, with his most recent deployment being in support of the Southern California wildfires.
Mr. McGann has a most varied background that includes more than 30 years of service as a Firefighter/EMT with the Loudon County, Virginia, Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management. He is the former fire chief for the town of Hamilton, Virginia, and he holds numerous State of Virginia certifications. Mr. McGann served for 4 years as a Loudon County fire commissioner and remains active as a volunteer Firefighter/EMT and as a fire officer.
Mr. McGann has extensive experience in adult education. He worked for many years as an international training manager and trainer with Xerox Corporation. He also served as training manager at the Integrated Justice Information Systems Institute, a non-profit whose mission is to assist justice and public safety agencies in the use of advanced technologies to better share mission-critical information. Mr. McGann has also worked as a professional Incident Command System (ICS) trainer, delivering both intermediate (ICS-300) and advanced (ICS-400) classes to State and local agencies throughout the country. He is an adjunct faculty member of the St.Petersburg College School of Public Safety, where he delivers online classes in emergency management and homeland security.
Mr. McGann holds a master’s degree in emergency and disaster management from the AmericanPublicUniversity and an undergraduate degree in management from ShenandoahUniversity in Winchester, Virginia. He is a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) through the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) and a Professional Emergency Manager (PEM) through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. He currently serves on the IAEM Training and Education Committee.
