BIGTOOTH MAPLES FOR BOERNE TEXAS

Tree Adoption Guidelines

The Native Plant Society of Texas-Boerne Chapter has a limited number of maple trees to be awarded to qualifying Boerne residents, organizations or businesses for the purpose of enhancing the local landscape and establishing Boerne as a prime destination for viewing fall foliage. Included in this program are free mentors, tree planting demonstration, care instructions and supplies to help ensure the survival of each maple tree planted. All completed application forms must be received no later than October 1.Trees arrive in late November and early December.

Priority will be given to those applicants wanting to plant near the most visible and publiclocations (parks, schools, playgrounds, main entryways and roadways). Tree grants may be awarded to the same individuals or organizations more than once but applications must be resubmitted each year.

Applicant’s Commitment:

● Submit a planting site that is within the Boerne city limits.

● Provide a signed letter from landowner or local officials giving permission to planton proposed planting site if not the personal property of the applicant.

● Plant tree in a visible location so that it is visible to the public from a city street.

● “Call Before You Dig” at 811. Ensure planting site is safe. This is a free service and required by law to ensure excavations will not affect utility cables and pipes (

● Attend a free tree planting demonstration and care instruction presentation just prior to picking up tree atthe designated Boerne location.

● Provide all needed help to lift, transport and plant tree, being very careful not to break the root ball or plant too deep which can harm or kill the tree. A 5-gallon tree will be approximately 5 ft tall and requires1 strong person to lift. Planting requires a hole about 2 feet diameter and approximately 10 to 12 inches deep but no deeper than the rootball.

● Plant tree before December 31. This gives the tree time to develop a deep root system before the hot summer.

● Water and provide maintenancefor at leastthe first two years after planting at which time the tree should have grown a large enough root system to survive on its own. However, after the tree has established a good root system, additional watering at least once a month may be needed during extreme drought.
