BIG V REFEREE NOMINATIONS FOR 2017 SEASON

With the 2017 Big V season fast approaching the TOC along with the CEO of Big V have agreed to adopt a slightly different approach for the coming season, by asking for referees to nominate for the Big V Panels for the 2017 season.

By getting referees to directly nominate for the Big V season we are attempting to ensure that all Victorian referees, who are eligible, available and keen to referee in the 2017 Big V Competition are known.

We were particularly attempting to capture those referees who maybe have not or are not available to follow the previous required pathways but are still keen to officiate in the Big V competition.

Hence we are asking referees who have met the following requirements;

1  Currently registered and financial Basketball Victoria referee

2  Have been aLevel 1A for at least 36 months, (as at the 13th. February 2017)

3  Meet the other specific criteria of the theory and fitness testing programs, (see attached)

Please download the Nomination Form from the VBRA website or contact your Branch Advisor (BVC Referee Development Officer – regional referees) who can provide an application form.

The Referee Advisor will be consulted when necessary prior to a new referee being considered for the 2017 Big V Panel.

The final decision will still be made by the Big V Commissioner in consultation with the TOC.

2017 ONLINE THEORY EXAMINATION

The 2016/7 VBRA online theory test is now available at this link:

https://www.classmarker.com/online-test/start/?quiz=3j657e4f5a5323be

Any affiliated member of the VBRA can attempt the test and receive feedback designed to improve their rule knowledge. Successful completion of the test is mandatory for all

- State League Referees - All referee coaches (in State Leagues or domestic competitions).

The conditions surrounding the test are the same as last year. • The test is taken online and can be completed on any computer, smart phone or tablet. It has a number of video questions, so connection to the Internet is required. • There is no time limit; the test can be stopped/continued at any time. • Each participant can have 3 attempts to reach the 80% pass mark. • Participants receive their test results via email as soon as they have completed the test. • Feedback is given for incorrect responses. • Questions/answers are presented in a random order each time the test is attempted.

The link to access the test is being emailed to all league officials from our 2016 lists (an important reason to keep us informed of your current email address). Please feel free to send this message on to anyone you know of that should have received it, but for some reason, hasn’t.

This would include officials who plan to be involved in League games for the first time in 2017.

It will also be posted on our Facebook page.

Note: Referees who intend to participate in Leagues, should complete the test before they attend a Fitness testing day.

MUVJBL AND BIG V

FITNESS TESTING PROGRAM FOR SEASON 2017

As previously flagged, next year sees a change in our fitness testing program for the respective MUVJBL and the Big V Season as we move to a more contemporary physical test, which is considered better aligned with our activity as basketball referees.

The YO YO Intermittent Recovery Test (Level 1) combines timed 20-meter runs along with short rest periods. Satisfactory completions of the required levels are indicated in the table below. The TOC while introducing a new test are also incorporating a process, in line with other States, to account for age and gender differences. The new YO YO test will be introduced for referees under 45 years of age, with the current Beep Test for those 45 years or over.

The qualification levels are specific for Victorian referees wishing to be involved in MUVJBL and

Big V. Referees involved in National and Semi National Competitions (NBL, WNBL, SEABL and National Junior Championships) are still required to satisfactorily complete their respective tests.

Qualification levels:

GENDER: AGE: YO YO LEVEL

Male Less than 30yrs 14.8

Female Less than 30yrs 13.4

Male 30yrs to 44yrs 14.4

Female 30yrs to 44yrs 12.3

Please note, those referees who are born in 1971 or before are required to do the old Beep Test and achieve the following standards.

BEEP TEST LEVEL

Male 45yrs & Over Complete Level 8

Female 45yrs & Over Complete Level 6

To assist referees prepare for these new requirements it is advisable that referees become familiar with as much information as possible. A video giving an idea of how the test operates can be viewed at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkOk_P5VnOA

Note: in this example, the runners continue running for as long as they can.

We will be stopping participants at the levels indicated above, and eliminating runners if they do not reach the lines on the sound twice in a row.

To also assist we have provided a Dropbox Link below, which has a copy of the test.

In addition you may download an app from the Apple App Store or Google Play stores. It costs $1.99. It explains how the test operates and allows you to practice and record the results you achieve over time - an ideal support to ensuring you reach the required level before the testing day.
