Dear Cook:

We are hoping you might want to attend this year’s special State Championship in Albert Lea, Minnesota. There are a number of things we are doing in order to make it even a better event than last year. We are hosting a backyard contest on Saturday for people who want to do one or two items and compete for “bragging rights” and be judged by the public. A rib eating contest will be Saturday prior to the awards.

  1. We are offering prize money of $10,480. The payout is to TEN PLACES IN ALL CATEGORIES OTHER THAN OVERALL. ALSO $500 FOR MID RANGE TEAM.
  2. Payout for Overall Champions of $3,000 and paying thru the third place and trophy for fourth and fifth place. $1,500 for 1st, $1,000 for 2nd, and $500 for 3rd overall.
  3. We are offering $4,800 total for the ten places in the four meats.
  4. We are offering $545 in prize money for Friday night Judged Awards for Chili, and homemade sauce. There will be a judges’ panel for the cash awarded for chili and sauce the public will determine the winners for the trophy for the chili. This way the cash awards are given to cooks anonymously judged by a panel. We are doing Anything Butt on Saturday.
  5. HOMEMADE SAUCE ONLY.
  6. Desserts judged on Saturday. Schedule is attached.
  7. Grand Champion gets invite to Great American Barbeque in Kansas City and the Royal American Barbeque. They also are in the draw for the Jack Daniel’s World.
  8. Overall Grand Champion, Dessert, and Chili winner are all AUTOMATIC QUALIFIERS for the 2014 WORLD FOOD CHAMPIONSHIP in Las Vegas in November.

All the categories other than the 4 meats are “anything goes” when it comes to cooking and presenting. All the categories of chili, sauce, anything butt, and desserts can be prepped or prepared in advance. We all know that chili is better the second day!

Chili: You cannot enter the chili competition for cash prize unless you are willing to serve the public. Please prepare 5 gallons. You will receive cups to serve the chili from your cooking area. Anyone with a spoon can be served. The public will have votes to deposit in a bucket (which we will also furnish) at your site. Public tasting of chili begins at 6:00 pm of Friday. The closed judging of the chili by a panel will be held at 6:00 pm. You will be given a container to turn in the chili to the judges’ panel. This judging is for the cash part of the award while the public tasting is for the trophy. AUTOMATIC QUALIFIER FOR THE WORLD FOOD CHAMPIONSHIP IN LAS VEGAS IN NOVEMBER.

Sauce: You are asked to turn in homemade sauce only. A container will be provided. The sauce will be judged by a spoon or on a cracker and not with any meat as we are judging the sauce alone. It can be turned in hot or cold, whatever you want. This is not a People’s’ Choice category.

Anything Butt and Desserts: Presentation and items are up to you just so they fit in the bread tray. Boxes will be furnished for these two categories but are not required to be used. Be sure to turn in the number assigned to each category with your entry. PLEASE DO NOT DO A DESSERT FOR THE ANYTHING BUTT CATEGORY.

WE WILL JUDGE CHILI AND SAUCE ON FRIDAY. ANYTHING BUTT IS THE FIRST CATEGORY ON SATURDAY AND DESSERT(AUTOMATIC QUALIFIER FOR THE WORLD FOOD CHAMPIONSHIP IN LAS VEGAS IN NOVEMBER) IS THE LAST CATEGORY SATURDAY.

This document serves as notification of the awards to be paid for the Big Island BBQ State Championship in Albert Lea, Minnesota. In consideration of sanctioning by KCBS, Perry Vining, the organizer, does hereby guarantee the payment of the following cash prizes and prizes to be awarded at the KCBS sanctioned contest, as follows:
