BHS Executive Committee Conference call

  1. Apologies :Andy Hamer. Not present: Colin Howie.
  1. Minutes of previous conference call: approved and confirmed as a true and accurate recording of that conference call.
  1. Matters arising:
  2. Malchau expenses. It is not clear whether expenses are being claimed for Mrs Malchau’s flight, which would be inappropriate. Peter Kay to forward expense claim to John Nolan. The treasurer to seek clarification of what is being claimed.
  3. John Timperley to draft a standard letter for invited speakers setting out what expenses can be reimbursed.
  4. Information booklet - John Nolan. All responses to be submitted to John Nolan by 12th July 2009.
  1. Revalidation and Recertification – a team is being put together by John Hodgkinson to help compile the necessary documentation. The committee will be established by the time of the Manchester BOA where the first meeting will take place. Suggested members include Witt, Bannister, Hart, Hodgkinson and Stone or MacDonald.
  1. ACCEA – members representing the British Hip Society have been agreed and names submitted. The timeline for submissions will be published in the spring newsletter.
  1. Letter from BUPA on coding and re-imbursement of FAI surgery

The letter drafted by Ian Stockley was agreed and has been submitted to the Health Care Policy Development Team of BUPA.

  1. Sub Specialty Fellowship Curriculum. Which Hip operations you would expect an Advanced Training Fellow (ATF) to do in a Hip Fellowship? Request for information from Prof Wallace. Ian Stockley to draft a reply which will then be circulated to the Executive.
  1. NIHR Partner Organisation status. The document required for the McMinn bursary has been partially completed by John Hodgkinson. It needs to be completed and sent to by a deadline of 3rd July 2009. Ian Stockley will ask Paul Pinsent to help with completing the form.
  1. Occupational Therapist Guidelines. OT s have made a request to John Nolan for Practical Guidelines for precautions patients should take after total hip replacement. John Nolan will put together advice on behalf of the British Hip Society.
  1. Dental prophylaxis. John Nolan highlighted concerns about conflicting advice with regard dental prophylaxis after hip replacement. It was noted that the initial guidelines from the BDS were made without consultation with the BOA. Dentists have expressed concern that the advice from NICE and the BDS conflicts with that from AAOS and recent articles in the JBJS. In April 2009 updated advice became available on the AAOS website and members of the executive were in favour of this balanced advice.
  2. Peter Kay will draw this to the attention of those compiling the BOA Blue Book.
  3. The advice will also be highlighted in the spring newsletter of the BHS (JT).
  4. Fares Haddad will write to NICE and the BDS with the concerns on this topic expressed by the Executive.

  3. 2009 Michael Whitehouse successful applicant. He will be required to give a one year update at the Sheffield meeting in 2010 and present at the BHS meeting in 2011.

  1. VTE and NICE – Colin Howie was unfortunately not available on this conference call. It was reported that Hamish Simpson was still optimistic that this three-arm trial could be taken forward with between 50 and 100 thousand patients. There is presently discussion between multiple bodies with regard the methodology and the conclusions of their deliberations are due to be presented at the BOA in September 2009.

The Executive fully supports this initiative and the application for substantial funding. It was noted that the trial would also help validate the HES data used by the NJR.

John Hodgkinson noted that the successful individuals normally sort out their trip and submit invoices. They should be asked for a report to be published on the website and to present at the BHS meeting after their Fellowship.

These surgeons will be asked to write a blog for the BHS website. They will also be required to present at the BHS meeting after their Fellowship.

Applicants for the travelling fellowships must be members of both the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Hip Society. This requirement will be added to the instructions for applicants.

  2. Anatomy Course – Johann Witt has agreed to run this course again but would like notification of delegates.
  3. Topics in focus: each of these focus topics will run for one and a half hours and there will be three invited speakers and time for questions
  4. Joint infection. (Ian Stockey)
  5. Primary acetabular components (John Timperley)
  6. Re-imbursement and Coding. HRG 4. (Bob Kerry)
  7. Guest speaker - Ian Stockley will consider a suitable invitee.
  8. Industry Participation – it was felt that the meeting should be open to engineers and scientists working in industry. Ian Stockley to write to Nick Borroff who is the link with industry. The course fee for delegates from the trade will be twice the normal course fee.

  2. Sales of Mailing lists – it was agreed that Leslie O’Leary should forward all requests to the secretary of the BHS. Commercial companies will be charged £1500 for delivery of information to the membership. The companies will provide sealed envelopes for us to forward. Where there is a request to write to the membership by non-commercial bodies, these requests will be brought to the Executive for a decision about suitability and what fee should be charged.
  3. Peter Kay has received a request from the Arthroplasty Care Practitioners for advice on the knowledge base and skill requirements for their profession as well as a work-based competency assessment plan. Peter Kay and Ian Stockley to work together with this aim.
  4. Signatures required to accompany scientific submissions to BHS. John Skinner will check BOA guidleines.
