Service Learning Q & A

Q: WHAT IS SERVICE LEARNING?Is it a club? A class?An extra-curricular?

ANSWER: Service Learning (SL) is an elective class. SL meets daily during 6th period, as well as participating in school and community events on occasional weekends and evenings. SL students engage in a variety of tasks, activities, and events that benefit their local and global communities, and enrich their own lives.

Q: IS THIS COMMUNITY SERVICE?

ANSWER: Although SLis a community-based class with a foundation of service, the program is not limited toits own students performing community service. SL students also work with classes and groups across campus. They provide opportunities for others to grow and learn through active participation in community service activities that are clearly connected to their academic programs.

Q: WHAT DO YOU DO IN SERVICE LEARNING?

ANSWER: Service Learning isstudent-driven class that is run every day by co-chairs who are elected each semester. The class works as a whole and in committees toplan, facilitate, and participate in events and activities. In addition to participating in and coordinatingcommunity service events, SL students help others on campus implement service activities that relate to what they’re learning in class.

Q:WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS OF THE CLASS?

Service Learning thrives with students who have a variety of personalities, talents, passions and skills. We want you to bring your unique self to the class! Still, there are some core qualities that are required. SL students may be outgoing, gregarious, natural leaders. But they know how to step back and let others shine. Or they may be a little nervous to get involved, but are willing to take small steps to grow. Some may not know yet what their passions are, but they want to find out. What SL students have in common is a feeling that there is something they should be doing, something they want to be doing, to make the world better.

SL is a class AND an extra-curricular. There is little homework, but there are expectations for participating outside of class. Students can expect to participate in 1-2 weekend and/or evening activities per quarter, as well as some assemblies and lunchtime events. When a committee is involved in a big project, students must be willing to spend time working outside of class. Not all work can be completed in class.

Q: WHAT WILL I GET OUT OF SERVICE LEARNING?

  • Through service learning, students learn about themselves and their relationship to the world and community around them.
  • Service learning allows students to engage in real-world issues and social problems, and helps them to work with community organizations to become "part of the solution."
  • Through their community involvement, students gain an understanding of community issues, community assets and community processes for making change happen.
  • Service learning helps students develop the skills and attitudes to become community builders in our rapidly changing, diverse world.

Q:WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO TAKE THE CLASS?

Students who meet the academic and conduct/citizenship requirements must turn in a complete application (including the supplemental writing) by the deadline. Interviews will be set up for the week after spring break.

We are glad you are interested in our program. It’s important that you read, understand, and feel comfortable with this information before applying or committing to Service Learning. Please feel free to contact the class

co-chairs or the advisor with any questions or concerns.
