UNIVERSITY OF PEACE IN AFRICA

TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY

Humanity in the 21st century is still exposed to crucial crisis and challenges that go far beyond any country boundary: civil wars, international terrorism, the vicious circle of violence and counter-violence, the non-respect of basic human rights. Fear, trauma and revanche seem to prime the need of healing, reconciliation and peace in people’s mind, communities, families and public organisations.

It is on this background, that the General Assembly of the UN called, the 20th November 1997, for the International Year of Peace in the Year 2000. One year later, appealed by the Nobel Peace Price Winners, the same Assembly voted in unanimity the proclamation of the 2001-2010 decade as “The International Decade of the Promotion of a Culture of Non-Violence and Peace”. Event though the foundations for international action towards a culture of non-violence and sustainable peace were laid during that decade, it is clear that the way ahead is still long and the endeavors to be deployed so titanic, particularly in Africa.

This continent suffers particularly of crises all across, peinful source of social turmoil and violent conflicts with massive human rights violations. Just to name Burundi, where recent elections have awakened hatred and violence; Senegal which hardly escapes from violent conflicts during recent presidential elections; Mali, which was quoted as model of democracy in Africa before its coup d’état and its armed conflict expanding from the North; Sudan-South Sudan war and violence; the post-election crisis in Democratic Republic of Congo with a resumption of war in North and South Kivu; the failure of the electoral process followed by a coup d‘état in Guinea-Bissau; religious fanatism and intolerance in Nigeria, and so on.

Thus, destruction and violence seem to be transmitted from generation to generation. And in Africa, frequent absence of legal organisation, facade democrats, bad governance, autocratic leaders, corruption, weakness of Civil Society, incoherent politics of the so-called "international community", destruction of people and populations are worsening year by year. It shows that pro-active and peaceful solutions can hardly be found through conventional negotiations and diplomats. Obviously, there is a strong need of change of attitudes and behaviour, constructive and positive mechanisms in the society and at personal level. That is why the learning and practice of non-violent management of conflict and disagreement should be the basic approach of every citizen. In this regard, capacity building of the catalysts and agents of nonviolent social transformations remains a huge challenge.

It is in this context that our UNIVERSITY OF PEACE IN AFRICA is placed and it aims to contribute to peace building and peace keeping, and to open an active and international space of new learning for actors of Peace. And indeed, through the long experience of UPA we realize that it is not the willingness and awareness that is lacking, but often the “how to do”, the “how to be” and the “how to become” a real peace promoter.
