Course Title: ALP 006 American Language Foundations: Reading

Pre-requisite or Co-requisite: ALP 004, ALP 005, ALP 007

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

ALP 006 American Language Foundations: Reading is a course for international students with little or no exposure to English. It provides them with instruction in pronouncing written words and understanding simple written texts. It also introduces students to the most common vocabulary of English and develops their ability to use this vocabulary in basic structures.

COURSE GOALS:

At the conclusion of the semester, students should be able to sightread and make accurate sound-letter correspondence when reading aloud; read and understand lexical, structural, and cultural meaning in short prose paragraphs; produce basic vocabulary orally and in writing.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Students will:

1.  understand sound/letter relationships

2.  use basic vocabulary in simple sentences, orally and in writing

3.  recognize parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs and prepositions.

4.  read and demonstrate comprehension of short prose paragraphs by responding to questions.

5.  Show an understanding of cultural meaning by responding to culture related questions.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Attendance: Students must attend class regularly and to come to class prepared to work. Students absent from a class session are responsible for the material covered and for the homework assigned

2.  Students MUST arrive on time and stay for the duration of the class period.

3.  Students must complete all assignments on time.

4.  Participation in peer group activity is important for your progress in learning and will be counted in your course grade.

5.  Students must take all quizzes and tests. Arrangements must be made with the teacher to take a test at a later date if the student is absent for a test. There will be NO MAKE-UP of quizzes. Missing a quiz or a test is equivalent to a zero.

Note: There is No Departmental Final Test in Foundations Reading.
