Beowulf: Guided Notes for pgs. 131-213

English IV AP / Mrs. Ramos

As you review the following topics, note ideas in your copy of Beowulf.

p. 133 As we are introduced to Queen Hygd, a digression tells of another queen. Explain how this juxtaposition of characters helps describe Hygd’s “queenly” characteristics.

141 - 145 When Beowulf recounts his battles with Grendel and Grendel’s mother for King Hygelac he is

quite descriptive. Note how, through his use of imagery, Beowulf brings the battle to life once again. Include what effect this imagery has on Hygelac, his court, and the reader.

The scop uses several techniques to indicate that time has elapsed. Identify at least two ways the poet conveys this quickening of time to the audience.

153 - 154 Identify “The Song of the Last Man”. In what ways is this passage both a flashback and

foreshadowing?

155 - 157 Review the description of the dragon. Note ways he can be compared to / contrast with the

descriptions of Grendel (9-13, 47-49) and Grendel’s mother (89-90).

165 - 167 “The Father’s Lament”, Hrethel’s loss of Herebeald, is similar in some ways to Hrothgar’s

lament at the devastation caused by Grendel (11-15). Note the parallels you see in these two scenes depicting grief.

159 - 169 In order for Beowulf to rightfully take the throne of Geatland, Herebeald, Haethcyn, Hygelac

and Heardred must all die. In the “Family Trees” diagram at the back of your book, note the circumstances that caused the death of each.

171 Why don’t the men join Beowulf in his fight against the dragon?

173 - 175 & Is Beowulf’s battle more like his battle with Grendel or the one with Grendel’s mother?

181 - 183 Identify and mark similarities.

177 - 179 Wiglaf makes a speech to the shirkers. Mark four reasons Wiglaf gives for helping Beowulf.

181 - 187 Mark specific ways Wiglaf helps Beowulf in the final stages of the battle against the dragon.

197 - 203 Identify all of the threats to Geatland. (Be careful- there’s a digression / flashback in there.)

207 - 209 What are Wiglaf’s final thoughts about Beowulf?

211 - 213 Identify and mark the specific elements of an Anglo-Saxon hero’s burial.
