STEP ONE: REGISTER

Please type your personal information into the form fields carefully before submission. Fields with an * are required. Use your proper name in the demographics area and provide as much detail in your answers as possible. Remember your student username & password as you will need this information each time you log on to the scholarship site. Click the “REGISTER” button when you are finished.

STEP TWO: SELECT A SCHOLARSHIP

By clicking on the drop down box you will see each of the available scholarships. This will give you a brief explanation. You will notice an “Answer Questions (##%)”. You will not be able to apply for the scholarship until all questions pertaining to that scholarship are answered 100%. You will only need to answer the questions once. After that, those same questions will apply to each scholarship. You may put “See Attached Student Profile” for the answers to questions about your school and community activities, volunteer activities, honors and awards, and work experience if you are attaching a profile containing all of this information.

STEP THREE: REVISING INFORMATION

Demographic information can be changed by using the “Edit Profile” tab.

Information on the scholarship application can be changed by going into that scholarship and editing.

STEP FOUR: SUBMITTING SCHOLARSHIPS

Click on “Apply” and print off the scholarship. You are responsible for submitting each scholarship application to the contact person listed on the scholarship. Be sure to include all required attachments. (Transcripts will be provided by the Guidance Office with a two-day advanced notice). Please submit your applications by the deadline stated on the application. Late applications may not be accepted.

Open to all applicants pursing a post-secondary education. Essay required. Letters of recommendation required.

The applicant must have a family member who has been a Benton County Cattleman member for at least the past two years. Applicant must be planning to attend a two-year technical school or four-year college. Letters of recommendation required.

Benton County Pork Producers

To be eligible for consideration, the applicant must be planning to study in an Ag-related field. Letters of recommendation required.

Bronson P. Werning Memorial Scholarship

To honor Bronson’s memory and his love of farming and agriculture, this scholarship will be awarded to a graduating V-S HS Senior who is an active FFA member and will be pursuing a post-secondary education in agriculture or an agriculture-related area of study. Essay required.

Open to past or present Vinton Fareway employees who are planning to pursue a post-secondary education. Essay required.

Dr. Ron Baldwin

Available to any graduating V-S HS Senior who has been accepted to the University of Northern Iowa to pursue a degree in Elementary Education and has demonstrated to their instructors that he/she is prepared to succeed at the university level. Minimum 2.75 GPA required. Essay required.

Edwin & Melba Werning Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who plans to continue his/her education at a university, college, community college or technical school. Essay required. Letters of recommendation required.

Two one-year scholarships will be awarded with a preference toward one female and one male. The applicants must be in good standing and in the top 30% of their graduating class. The recipients must have been admitted to an Iowa College or University. Essay required.

Open to all applicants pursing a post-secondary education. Essay required. Letters of recommendation required.

Garrison Emergency Services Auxiliary

This scholarship is given to a graduating senior who resides in the Garrison area. The student shall have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Selection preference shall be given to a student who has pursued a college-preparatory curriculum.

The Garrison Lions recognize academic excellence, but place equal or greater emphasis in the following areas: community service, employment and extracurricular activities.

Awarded to a graduating senior who resides within a 10-mile radius of City Hall in Garrison, Iowa. The recipient shall have been accepted and enrolled in any program of post high school education. Essay required. Letters of recommendation required.

Howard & Imogene Matters

Awarded to a V-S HS graduate who is planning a career in a science-related field of study. Applicants must have successfully completed three units (6 credits) of high school science while maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or better in high school science classes. Applicants must be able to document acceptance into a post-secondary educational institution. Essay required.

John & Beverly Anderson Charitable Trust

John Anderson was born and raised on a farm near Vinton and graduated from high school in 1952. Beverly also was born and raised near Vinton, graduating in 1951. The couple worked hard over the years in the oil business and also in the farming industry. They have been known for their generosity to the community. The Andersons, with little public recognition, have financially assisted Vinton-Shellsburg students to attend post-secondary schools that they otherwise may not have been able to attend. It is the desire of Beverly and John to provide financial assistance to deserving students who wish to continue their education at a four-year school and who have financial need.

Community College


John and Beverly Anderson believe strongly in the need to support and develop the education of our youth for their future and our community's future. Up to twenty-five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded each year to graduating seniors who have been accepted to an Iowa Community College enrolled in a program that will take two or less years to complete. Minimum 2.0 GPA. Essay required. Letters of Recommendation required.

Judy Wood Memorial

Judy was long-time Teacher's Associate in the Vinton-Shellsburg district. In honor of her love of the students and belief in education, this scholarship is being made available to a student who will be continuing their education at a 2- or 4-year institution. Preference will be given to a student who can demonstrate that they will truly benefit from this scholarship both financially and academically. Essay required.

Marjorie Schloeman McDowell Estate

Available to any graduating senior pursuing a degree at an accredited four-year college or university. This scholarship is intended to assist the student with payment for their second year of college, so payment of the scholarship shall be made to the post-secondary institution after successful completion of the first year. Palace Theatre

Because the Palace is a community forum for the performing arts and volunteerism plays a major role in its success, scholarship criteria will include (but is not limited to) participation in the arts and/or volunteer community service. Essay required.

Available to females only. Applicants will be required to include two recommendations: one from a teacher or administrator and the other from an adult such as a minister or employer. Essay required.

Scott Hill “Go Hard or Go Home” Memorial

Scott was born and raised in the Cedar Rapids area. He was a 1981 graduate of CR Jefferson and a graduate of the Machinist Program at Kirkwood Community College. In 1987, Scott married Vicky Cooper and they settled in Shellsburg where they raised their four children, who all attended V-S schools. Scott bravely battled cancer for five years and passed away on January 6, 2012. Throughout his illness, Scott continued to be active in supporting his children's school activities and the many civic organizations he was involved with. His motto was: "Go Hard or Go Home"!


Applicants should be capable of demonstrating examples of community involvement, good citizenship and/or leadership skills. Candidate must be able to provide evidence of plans to attend a vocational or technical college or university pursuing a program of study focused on a career in the trades. Essay required. Thomas Bolenbaugh Memorial

Two scholarships will be awarded to students planning to attend the University of Iowa, Iowa State University or University of Northern Iowa majoring in a professional, business or government career. Each recipient will be a very good-to-excellent student with the potential to succeed academically at a large public university and, later on, in a professional, business or government career. To be eligible for this scholarship, the applicant must have received Title One services at some point during their elementary school years.

This scholarship is based on the following criteria:

·  The recipient must rank academically in the top 1/3 of the graduating class;

·  The recipient must demonstrate leadership qualities in academic and extra curricular activities;

·  The recipient must plan to continue his/her education at a university, college or technical school.

Viking-Vikette Athletic Boosters

Awarded to a minimum of four graduating seniors based on the following criteria:

1.  Applicant must have participated in a minimum of two sports each year during high school.

2.  Applicant must have maintained a minimum 2.5 GPA.

3.  Consideration will be given to applicants demonstrating good leadership and sportsmanship qualities throughout their high school years.

4.  Applicant must have a letter of recommendation from a V-S HS faculty member.

5.  A personal profile, which includes professional goals, school/community activities, honors and achievements, must be submitted for consideration.

Vinton Garden Club

Awarded to a student majoring in a Garden-related field, i.e. conservation, landscaping, agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, etc. At the end of the student’s first semester they will be required to provide a transcript showing proof of studies in a garden-related field. Minimum 2.50 GPA. Essay required.

Vinton Kiwanis Club

The Kiwanis Club is a community service organization whose purpose is to help advance the community. A scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating V-S student who is pursuing a post-secondary education. Essay required.

Open to all applicants pursuing a post-secondary education at a two- or four-year school. Lions is an organization devoted to community service so you will be asked to provide information about your community service experiences.

These scholarships are open to all applicants pursuing a post-secondary education at a two- or four-year school. Essay required.

The VSEA will present two scholarships to senior boys or girls going on to a four-year school. Preference is given to students entering the field of education, but is not required. Essay required.

Virginia Gay Hospital & Clinics Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to an applicant intending to further education in a medical field. Letters of reference required. Essay required.

Virginia Gay Hospital/Jeanette M. Miller Memorial

Jeannette M. Miller was a hard-working woman who was careful with what she had, live frugally, and was generous in taking care of those people and institutions that took care of her. The Virginia Gay Hospital Health Care Foundation is the grateful recipient of one of her gifts and, as she requested, we will fulfill her wish to provide scholarships for students to take nurses training.
