Program

Developing Tomorrow's Leaders

Class of 2008

Philosophy

To help develop competent, motivated, ethical and skilled executives who will ensure provision of needed services for individuals with mental retardation or other developmental disabilities.

Rationale

To develop a functional program that helps prepare aspiring professionals in the field of MR/DD for future positions in Ohio's County Boards of MR/DD or similar organizations.

The program is comprised of a one-year curriculum emphasizing a practical course of study (seminars, workshops, visitations, classroom instruction and observations) at the state and local levels.

The major emphasis is on superintendent skill development. "Leaders are those who help focus and identify change and establish a vision, while managers quite simply manage what is. We believe that we should be leading change."

Eligibility Criteria and Selection

Interested individuals will have to meet the criteria for Associate Membership in the OSCBMR/DD which includes:

•Being employed in the MR/DD or a related field in a Management or Supervisory position and having the written endorsement of one's employing Board or Employer.

•The eligible individual must have completed a Master's degree or is a candidate for such a degree leading to Superintendent Certification by the Ohio Department of MR/DD.

•Individuals must have employer approval and commitment to the individual to allow the time, necessary travel and professional development reimbursement.

•The eligible individual will be required to complete an inventory of skills and knowledge. From this inventory a checklist of areas that need strengthening will be developed and become part of the participant's individual Superintendent development program plan (ISDP).

Pay a participation fee of $300.00* ($50.00 will be credited to Associate Membership fee in Superintendent’s Association) Conference registration fees are not included in this amount.

Goals

•To provide and maintain a trained qualified core of individuals who have the leadership skills to assume the position of Superintendent of a county board of MR/DD.

•To upgrade and enhance the total quality of the leadership of the MR/DD service delivery system in areas such as: community based employment, individual housing in the community, management of residential facilities, supported living and waiver services, social and recreational activities, and person-centered planning or self-determination.

•To provide a leadership environment, which encourages and supports individuals who aspire to become leaders and enhance their skills as executives.

•To provide for the orderly transition of leadership in the field of MR/DD in Ohio as current leaders retire.
