Monitoring of TELPAS Calibration Activities

Procedures

As previously announced in the September 4, 2015 communication from the Texas Education Agency about important changes to the Texas assessment program, TELPAS holistic rating training will include changes to calibration procedures. Raters will be required to complete calibration activities in proctored sessions that have been established by the district or campus. In order to help coordinators plan for and schedule monitored calibration sessions, the following guidance is provided.

Before Calibration Activities

Complete and sign the form titled "Calibration Session Roster 2017" and email a scanned copy to the Assessment Director and Bilingual Director (cc: Gracie Rodriguez and Connie Rojas),beforeany calibration activities are in progress.

  • Because you are submitting the form before calibration activities are conducted, not all columns will be completed at this time; however this serves to provide an overview of when and where these sessions will be taking place.
  • Complete and sign a form for each session. If you have scheduled 3 sessions, for example, then 3 forms should be submitted.
  • The form also allows you to document those who have completed the “Assembling” and “Verifying” training courses. Include yourself if you have participated in this course. This information can be included in the 1st roster.

During Calibration Activities

Bothnew and returning raters must complete “calibration” activities in a monitored session. New raters(and those who have not completed calibration in the last three school years)must complete the online basic training course before attending a calibration session. All raters must receive administration procedures training, and sign an oath, prior to completing any holistic rating training.

  • Monitored calibration sessions must be completed before students may be holistically rated for TELPAS.
  • Raters will need 1-2 hours to complete a calibration set. Raters must finish a calibration set once it is started. They will not be able to save their progress and return later to complete a calibration set.
  • If successful on set 1, raters are done and do not proceed to set 2. If unsuccessful on set 1, the rater must complete set 2 in a separate session scheduled on a different day to allow the rater ample opportunity to revisit their PLD's. The Campus Testing Coordinator, Campus Testing Coordinator, or designated person must provide supplemental support to these individuals before attempting set 2. Supplemental support is defined as a one-on-one session between the rater and designated person where PLD’s are reviewed to prepare the rater for set 2.
  • A rater who is not successful after set 2 will not be utilized as a TELPAS rater.
  • Each calibration set must be actively monitored. A person designated as a proctor should be scheduled for each session. A testing coordinator or administrator who has received administration procedures training may serve as a proctor but must not be teachers serving as TELPAS raters this year according to page T-17 of the DCCM.

After Calibration Activities

Upon completion of all Calibration activities, complete and sign the "Calibration Session Roster 2017" with all columns filled and email a scanned copy to the Assessment Director and Bilingual Director (cc: Gracie Rodriguez and Connie Rojas).
