Annex I Plants classifying Beef Carcases and Price reporting
SUMMARY – 2014
- Total slaughtering at DAFM plants increased by 148,151 in 2014(1,647,827) compared to 2013 (1,499,676). Steers (37%), Heifers (26%) and Cows (22%) account for 85% of the total slaughtering in DAFM plants.
- The number of Young Bulls slaughteredin 2014increased slightly by 2,447 on 2013. Young Bull slaughtering accounted for 22% of the overalladult male slaughter in 2014 which decreased from 25% in 2013 and 30% in 2012.(P.18)
- The number of Steers slaughtered in 2014 increased by 83,745 compared to 2013 accounting for 73% of the overall adult male slaughter in 2014 compared to 71% in 2013 and 66% in 2012. (P.18)
- The number of Heifers slaughteredin 2014 increased significantly by 54, 430 on 2013 and accounted for 54% of the adult female slaughter. The number of Cows slaughteredin 2014decreased slightly by 1,309 on 2013 and accounted of 46% of the adult female slaughter.
- Total slaughtering at Local Authority plants increased by 9,385 in 2014 (98,343) compared to 2013 (88,958) (P.19).
- Steer, Heifer, Cow and Young Bull carcase weights increased in 2014 by 3kgs, 10kgs, 13kgs and 8kgs respectively compared to 2013. (Section 2, P8-15)
- The conformation results show improved conformation for Heifers, Young Bulls and Cows in 2014 compared to 2013.Heifers show the most improved conformation with 14.9% in E and U grades compared to 13.2 % in 2013. This has increased year on year since 2010 (7.4%) (P.8-15)
- In contrast Steer conformation declined in 2014 with smaller percentages grading E and U and a higher percentagesin O and P grades compared to 2013. (P.8-15)
- The results for fat show higher fat scores across all categories of animal in 2014 compared to 2013, with higher percentages in fat scores 3, 4 and 5’s. (P.8-15)
- Live exports of calves increased significantly by 19,130to 106,217in 2014.Live exports of weanlings, stores and finished cattle all increased compared to 2013 levels. (P.21)

5. BEEF CARCASE CLASSIFICATION and PRICE REPORTING INSPECTIONS
5.1 Classification Checks
In 2014 there were a total of 1,647,827 carcases of adult cattle (excl Veal) classified. There were a total of 515 control visits conducted in these plants during the yearand 51,017 carcases were checked for conformation and fat during these visits.

5.3 Price reporting
Any factory slaughtering >20,000 adult bovines per week must report prices on a weekly basis to DAFM. In 2014, 24 factories reported prices to DAFM. (This figure will go up to 25 in 2015) Price reporting factories slaughter 88% of the National kill.
In 2014, DAFM officers carried out 57 price audits of these factories examining details of payments / returns to producers for almost 70,000 carcasses.
During the course of each audit, authorised officers checked identification, weights, classification and prices paid to producers against the information reported to the DAFM to ensure the accuracy of Price Reporting to the Commission, DAFM Policy Division, DAFM Website, The Price App and the Farming Press.
6. PRICE REPORTING BY SUBCLASSES
Information on Prices paid by individual factories for steers, cows and heifers is uploaded weekly to the Department website at the following web address:

In October 2014 a new “Beef PriceWatch” App was launched. This application, developed by theDepartment for smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices, provides users with up-to-date information on the average price paid for animals in 24 of the DAFM approved meat factories throughout the country. Behind these representative prices, the user is one click away from detailed information, at factory level, for prices across the entire 15 x 15 beef carcass classification grid.The App will work on a PC, laptop or mobile device and can be accessed at this link:
