General Information
Beckley Area Foundation Scholarship Programhas 168 separately namedfunds established by individuals, firms andorganizations.
Eligibility
Using the BAF Scholarship Catalog Quick Reference Worksheet on pages 3 thru 8, create your list of potential scholarships by residence, high school, college attending and field of student. From this list read each scholarship’s criteria and application methods. If you do not meet criteria for a particular scholarship DO NOT apply for it. General criteria applying to most funds are as follows:
- Must be a resident of West Virginia, unless otherwise specified by the criteria
- Must be a full time student (minimum of 12 hours)
- Must demonstrate academic achievement (2.5 GPA), unless otherwise specified by the particular fund
Application
- Use the correct application form! Submit to the correct organization.
- If using the Beckley Area Foundation you will need to submit one application for eachscholarship you are seeking.
- Beckley Area Foundation fillable application is available for download.It cannot be submitted electronically.
- Make sure to save the application on your computer prior to completing.
- Attach all required documents and information. Incomplete or improperly submittedapplication packets will not be considered.
- DO NOT STAPLE your application.
- All information received from applicants will be treated as confidential. Selection committees will adhere to BAF’s required confidentiality and conflict of interest policies.
Timeline
BAF application packet must be delivered or postmarked by April 1st.
- Some scholarships have a different application form and deadline noted in the criteria catalog description. Read Carefully for these details.
- Applicants receiving awards will be notified during their school awards ceremony or by Beckley Area Foundation via email.
- Selected applicants must confirm their information and school they are entering by contacting BAF 304-253-3806 or .
- Scholarship award payments are made directly to the college beginning in early August.
- If a student transfers to another institution or drops out prior to scholarship’s expiration they must notify BAF and an attempt to re-capture remaining scholarship awards will be made.
Are these scholarships taxable? Monies received for tuition, fees and books may not incur tax liability while monies applied to room and board may be considered taxable income. These awards are to be applied to direct college expenses at the institution, such as tuition, fees and books. The recipients are responsible for any tax liability incurred as a result of these awards. The Beckley Area Foundation does not provide tax information to the student or the Internal Revenue Service. The student is fully responsible for all tax reports.
If I am awarded a scholarship, how much will I receive? Awards are based upon available income from an endowment; the amount of scholarship from a given fund can vary from year to year. Some, not all, scholarships are renewable.
May I receive scholarships from more than one fund? Yes, however you must submit a separate application packet for each scholarship for which you are applying.
Does the Beckley Area Foundation make the decisions about who is awarded a scholarship? Each scholarship fund has its own selection committee. The Beckley Area Foundation processes the application materials for the committees that make the recommendations for the Board of Directors approval.
If I receive a scholarship for one year, will I automatically receive that award for the following year? No. Renewals, where applicable, are at the Foundation’s discretion. If you are eligible for a renewal, you must complete renewal form.
