Bear Scare….GRRRR

In FrostValley there have been many stories dealing with Black Bears. But this one is different. SquadCA and CD was thinking this was just going to be a regular, non-exciting geology class with Frost Valley Staff, Kelly Good. We were dead wrong! As our teacher goes down to the cave by herself to see what she could see, Ms. Good stopped. She was very confused about a strange smell coming from the cave and why it was strangely very dark. Then Ms. Good heard a growl and realized there was a mother Black Bear and her two cubs in the cave. Ms. Good backs away up the hill and signals us to be quiet and to run! We had gone a distance when we warned another group and walked up a path. There, our teachers saw a black mound in the ground…bear scat! After putting a hand over it and jabbing with a stick, Good told us it was fresh. We soon began to sing to scare the bear away. Finally we came to the field safe and sound…it was sooo scarey.

Here are some tips to stay safe:

  1. Be quiet around bears. If you scream and hurt their ears they could chase you.
  2. Never run…bears have an instinct to chase…in the case of running run downhill
  3. Always go in groups
  4. Never go near a mother with cubs
  5. Don’t go off the path

Interviews…

Chef Interview

Yesterday we interviewed a chef named Kelly Horos. We asked five questions that we thought needed to be answered.

Our first question asked was: How do you decide what food to make? She replied that they follow a written menu and every two weeks the menu is changed with repetitive styles.

Next we asked her if she knew what the most popular food was? And as you probably know it was pizza.

Next, Devin and I asked who the head chef was? She replied that it was John Hasenflue.

As our fourth question we asked what her favorite food was? She said she loved to cook BBQ stuff like ribs and steaks.

For a fifth and last question we asked Kelly what the hardest job was being a chef? She replied: preparation and clean-up.

What’s with the food at FrostValley?

Sunday’s pizza had been a good start. As we got into the middle of the week it wasn’t as good. Monday’s breakfast had included eggs that were a bit rubbery, sausages that had seemed to just been nuked. Many others hated the dinner of pork and gravy. The gravy was like jello and the pork had not been cooked all the way. Wednesday’s lunch however was a chance to increase the popularity of pizza. This was a chance for the Total and Rice Crunchy cereal to not run out. Plus who let the milk go spoiled while Tuesday’s food was being served. Let’s hope that Thursday’s food is an improvement since it is our last day here.

The Store

Have you visited the Frost Valley Store yet? Well, if you haven’t you probably should. There are lots of awesome items you can buy. There are hats, shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, caterpillars, dog tags, and many more. I bought a yellow caterpillar and named it “Shaba Laba Ding Dong”. I also bought two dog tags. Even though the prices might be a bit high but its worth it. Remember to visit the store and have fun.

Beads In Hair

Last night, all the girls in Hussey, puts beads in their hair. Some girls got manicures and polished their nails. Other girls played games like poker, uno, and go fish. I had fun and hoped to do it again soon.

Schedule

Why is FrostValley’s schedule so packed? There should be at least 1 ½ hours a day after the first class and 40 or 50 minutes after the second class for free activities. FrostValley should also try harder to get us into better afternoon activities.

Luggage Worries

What’s going to happen tomorrow other than everyone going home? Will there be rain, hail or wind? Who knows? If it rains we and our luggage will be soaked. If it hails, everyone will be in pain. Last but not least, if strong winds come, our luggage might be blown away.

Green Hand and Catskill Witch

Not only the Green Hand Plays Pranks

When the Green Hand struck last night, we were all screaming in surprise. When we went to bed, Samantha D. was the first one asleep. So Kathryn S, Brittany E., Beezer and I pulled a prank on her. First we took some toilet paper and TP’d her bed. Then we put toothpaste down her back. We had to do it slowly though. Then I felt bad and took it off. When I was taking the toothpaste off of her, she said “Ow, that hurts.” Luckily she was still halfway asleep. Then we put soap on the bathroom mirror (GO HOME) and then put shaving cream around it. After that we wrote on one windown (Shake Your Tail Feathers, Boo, and Gotcha). The soap was squishing so we were trying not to laugh too hard. To make sure she wasn’t just faking being asleep I shook the bed. She didn’t wake up. Next we were going to tie her shoes together, but we didn’t know whose was whose. The last thing we did was put clothing on her stuffed animals…it was so much fun.

Thoughts from Wednesday

“There is no such thing as the Green Hand” and “The Catskill Witch is Just a Myth”. The he-men of Quirk Lodge were singing a different tune on Tuesday night after a visit from the Green Hand. With lightening speed and sarcastic efficiency, the legendary ghoul totally dismembered their belongings. Maybe next time the boys will show a little respect.

Squad DY joined forces with Mercedes to find the “treasure” at the end of the GPS class on Tuesday.

Tether Ball is the new favorite sport of many of the AGM boys after their world class tournament after dinner on Tuesday.

Mrs. Scoville and Mrs. Howell are the two new resident experts on the history of the Castle.

Who are the two big guys cleaning up the six graders in football the last two nights?

Did anyone get the name of the AGM boy who had the girls in his boat?

A Week to Remember

A week never to be forgotten, that is what it was. Why did it have to go by so fast? So much happened during those five short days, that our memories are filled with enough to last us a life-time.

There was the farewell to our families, the three hour bus rides, and wondering if some of us could last till the bus stop. There were the first campfires and all the wonderful stories. There was the cereal bar in the morning and the salad bar at night. The hayrides to HighFalls. The tired feet and aching backs after all the hikes. We collected specimens from the pond, we took pictures for our website, and we walked every inch of the valley.

It was the first year we came to the Valley together both AGM and JFS. But we will be leaving as a class together. We filled the dining hall each meal with wonderful laughter and talk.

How captivated we were by our own imagination when it was stimulated by the scary forms of the Green Hand and wondering if it would pay us a late night visit. We never thought that learning could be so much fun!

Thank you to all the parents who took the time to spend the week with us…you were great!

Thank you to the teachers and staff members who filled our time with new learning and much laughter.

Thank you to the students who did their best in all that they tried…
