BCNSA Meeting Minutes

Thursday, May 13, 2004

In Attendance:

Claudia, Hoa, Eva, Michele A., Sean, Tim, Emily, Heather, Michele M.

New Face:

Hoa Trang – First Year

Head Start Information:

Michele A.: Who’s coming?

Emily: May not be able to attend

Michele A.: Academic Advising is after lunch but you should go the whole day. They may ask you to do all of Head Start so watch out and just say no if you don’t want to.

Dr. Barbara will do academic advising – ways to be tactful when dealing with the new students and any parents.

Location – Katzman lounge in the basement of Laurier.

Sean: Go into front door of Laurier

Michele A.: 4 of you should be there

Tim: Does it start at 8:30?

Michele A.: Approximately. Find Sherri and Soula and tell them you’re only there for Academic Advising. Be there at 8:30.

Sean: If people show up is that ok if they haven’t signed up?

Michele A: If they’re from BCN that’s probably fine. There will be different sessions during the day and people will be broken down into groups.

Sean: Anything else?

Michele A.: That’s it.

BCNSA’s Involvement in the Science Fair (WWW):

Claudia and Emily describe the Science Fair BCNSA game proposal. See the link on the website for the proposal.

Sean: Was afraid it would end up being a cheesy game but it’s actually really well done. Proud of our awesome game.

** To volunteer to help with the game see the website (uwindsor.ca/bcnsa)**

Claudia: Faculty involvement – how to do it?

Sean: Dr. Cohen’s pretty into it.

Eva: Dr. Poling?

Emily: Anyone have nerf guns?

Heather: Steve has old BCN shirts. Find out about them.

BCNSA Mentorship Program:

Claudia: Added to the mentorship form that Michele M. sent to her. Some issues on whether some of the questions would be politically correct to ask. Included a sentence that states ‘If you want to fill in the following sections.’

Tim: Is it going to be on the website? (the form?)

Michele M.: We’ll talk to Jen about it.

Claudia: Has compiled a list of everywhere on campus one can go for help with various issues.

Michele M.: This sounds like a good thing to include in the Survival Guide.

Claudia: Should mentorship training include a sheet on study skills?

Michele A.: Tips on how the mentors study might be more personal.

Sean: Good progress!

BCNSA Budget and Funding:

Sean: 10 days ago emailed Dr. Caron with the funding proposal. He has yet to get a response. He asked for a $1300 start up capitol and will email Dr. Caron again soon if he still doesn’t hear back.

1 quote for t-shirts so far from Omar - $8.

Emily: Has another quote from a place in London that’s cheaper and shipping’s included.

Michele M.: Who’s designing?

Claudia: Hoa’s a good artist.

Sean: Would like to get more quotes before we agree to anything.

First Year Survival Package:

Michele M.: Idea to set up a section on the website for a used book sell/exchange between BCN students. Would this be a good idea?

Everyone agrees it would be.

Eva: Dr. Poling has generously donated 2 first year biology books for the raffle students will be entered in when they purchase a survival package.

Michele M.: Could everyone go through their old stuff and come up with a list of things they’d be willing to donate to the survival package and email the list to so I can start organizing what we have and what we’ll need to get?

Heather: Just first year stuff?

Michele M.: Yes, we’re just targeting first years right now to see how the whole thing goes.

The Airing of Grievances a.k.a. General Stuff:

Claudia: Is it appropriate for us to ask companies for donations?

Everyone: Yes!:)

Michele M.: What about Pfizer as a donor? They sponsor the Canada Wide Science Fair and our program is really research based, maybe that’s something we could look into.

Michele M.: What about the field trip? Is there any reason 1st and 2nd year students can’t go?

Sean: contact Dr. Zielinski.

Michele M.: What about the faculty Meet and Greet…where does that stand?

Tim: Has emailed the faculty and is waiting for a response.

Michele M.: Reads Dean Houston’s response to our email. Way to go on the letter!

Sean: Reminds everyone to check out the updates to the website.

Claudia: Who do I talk to about getting the mentorship form onto the website?

Sean: Tim

Sean: Calls an official end to the meeting.
