Exporter Up In Arms!

You are a member of parliament and have just received an email from an irate business person in your constituency. She is very frustrated with all of the requirements at the border to export some of her artisan jewellery to the United States. She says the requirements are not only bureaucratic, but also cause big delays in transportation time. She does not understand why she needs to ‘report’ her goods and apply for a business number. All of these rules are holding up her goods and causing delays!

Your Task: Compose a response e-mail to reassure her that the documentation, business number (BN), and wait time is in the best interest of everyone. You may wish to consult the Canadian Border Service Exporters ( web page and look at the Exporters “Handy Guide” ( to exporting.

  • illegal drugs

Discuss the implications of having active border control. What would have been the longer-term effects on the economy and society if border control had not been adhered to? Print a copy of your report for your teacher and be prepared to discuss your thoughts with your teacher and peers.
