Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 70 Max Marks: 75

Note: Attempt six questions in all. Q. No. 1 is compulsory.

1. Answer any five of the following (limit your answer to 50 words). (4x5=20)

a) How do you find out the equilibrium of non-coplanar forces?

b) Define angle of repose and angle of friction.

c) What distinguishes a roller support from a hinged support?

d) Why are members of a truss two force members (Tensile or Compressive)? Explain.

e) Define polar moment of inertia and radius of gyration.

f) Find the maximum bending moment in a cantilever beam of length 5 m carrying a UDL of 10kN/m over its span.

g) Show that moment about a point is two times the area of triangle formed by the force and that point.

h) Give the assumptions made in theory of bending.

2. Two identical rollers, each of weight 1000 N, are supported by an inclined plane and vertical wall as shown. Find the reactions at the contact points A, B and C. Assume all surfaces to be smooth. (10)

3. Find the reaction at supports of the beam as shown in figure. (10)

4. A semi circular area is removed from the trapezoid as shown in figure. Determine the centroid of the remaining area. (10)

5. Find the moment of inertia of the area shaded in figure about edge AB. (10)

6. Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams for the overhang beam. (10)

7. State the assumptions made in the theory of pure torsion. Derive the torsion formula:

(10)

8. A steel beam of hollow square section of 60 mm outer side and 50 mm inner side is simply supported on a span of 4 metres. Find the maximum concentrated load the beam can carry at the middle of the span if the bending stress is not to exceed 120 N/mm2. (10)
