Basically, on the days listed, you will get about half of class time to work on the trial.
Jury members, you will receive your assignments (Trial Assignment A & B next week). Trial Assignment C will be given to you the day of the trial and will be due Monday, April 5.
Wednesday, March 24 or Thursday, March 25
· Complete Witness Dossiers for the characters in your book, with your Choice Book group. Bring your books, character sheets, notes, etc. to the computer lab. Witness Dossiers are on www.maotrial.pbworks.com.
· Assign trial roles.
· Prosecution attorneys: Decide if you are going to prosecute Mao on all crimes against humanity or just one. Let the Defense team and Mrs. Hanson know.
· Attorneys: Trial Assignment A (Opening statement draft) due Tuesday.
· Witnesses: Trial Assignment A (Witness statement) due Monday.
Monday, March 29
· Witnesses: Trial Assignment A due.
· Upload documents to www.maotrial.pbworks.com.
· Trial work time: Attorneys and witnesses work together to prepare direct examination questions for all witnesses. Witnesses should focus on writing out complete answers to the direct examination questions (Trial Assignment B due Wednesday).
· Jury: Trial Assignment A (you will receive in class, 10 points in Homework).
Tuesday, March 30
· Attorneys: Trial Assignment A due today.
· Witnesses: Trial Assignment B will be due tomorrow.
· Trial work time: Attorneys and witnesses work together to prepare direct examination questions for all witnesses. Attorneys, use the documents on www.maotrial.pbworks.com to start drafting cross-examination questions for opposing witnesses.
· Jury: Finish Trial Assignment A.
Wednesday, March 31
· Witnesses: Trial Assignment B due today.
· Attorneys: Trial Assignment B due by end of class tomorrow.
· Trial work time for attorneys and witnesses. Start doing practice runs of witness questions. Witnesses should be able to answer all of their questions in detail.
· Homework assignment: Read articles for China Jigsaw. Due Monday.
Thursday, April 1
· Final practice session for trial.
· Attorneys: Trial Assignment B due by end of class today.
· Jury: China Jigsaw work time.
Friday, April 2
· Trial today. Attorneys and Witnesses, your performance today counts as Trial Assignment C (10 points in Conceptual Understanding).
· Jury, your participation and performance during deliberation today counts as Trial Assignment C (10 points in Conceptual Understanding). You are required to take notes and they will be collected.
· Jury, your written reflection after the trial counts as Trial Assignment B (10 points in Writing). You will do this Monday during class in the Computer Lab.
· If any of you miss the trial you are required to do the written make-up assignment. See Mrs. Hanson for details.
· Homework assignment: Read and annotate articles for China Jigsaw. Due Monday.
Monday, April 5
· Jury will do Trial Assignment C in Computer Lab.
· Witnesses and Attorneys: China Jigsaw work time.
ASSIGNMENTS FOR WITNESSES AND ATTORNEYS
Honor Code Level Two
Trial Assignment A- Witnesses
· Due start of class on Monday- 10 points in Writing (all-or-nothing points; late work will not be accepted. If you are absent that day, email it to Mrs. Hanson at by 3:35 Monday).
· Write a Witness Statement for the person you are playing in the trial.
· The Witness Statement should include:
o A paragraph that gives specific details about the witness. Use your book, notes, and imagination to create a vivid personal background.
o A paragraph that explains what happened to the witness either during the Cultural Revolution or as a result of the Cultural Revolution. Again, use your book, notes, etc. to create this.
o A paragraph that explains why the witness is testifying for the Prosecution or Defense. In other words, explain what you will say on the stand that will prove Mao’s guilt or maintain Mao’s innocence.
· Must be typed and double-spaced.
· Bring one hard copy to class on Monday.
· Be able to access the document electronically during class on Monday.
Trial Assignment B- Witnesses
· Due start of class on Wednesday- 10 points in Homework (all-or-nothing points; late work will not be accepted. If you are absent that day, email it to Mrs. Hanson at by 3:35 Wednesday).
· Write ten direct examination questions and your answers (in detail) that your attorneys could use when questioning you on the stand.
· Must be typed and double-spaced.
· Bring one hard copy to class on Wednesday.
· Be able to access the document electronically during class on Wednesday.
Trial Assignment A- Attorneys
· Due start of class on Tuesday- 10 points in Writing (all-or-nothing points; late work will not be accepted. If you are absent that day, email it to Mrs. Hanson at by 3:35 Tuesday).
· Write a draft of an Opening Statement that could be used for the trial.
· Be sure to include the charges the trial will address, your team’s position, references to evidence that will be presented, and why your position is the better one. Use convincing, colorful language to hook your jury and grab their attention.
· Must be typed and double-spaced.
· Bring one hard copy to class on Tuesday.
· Be able to access the document electronically during class on Tuesday.
Trial Assignment B- Attorneys
· Due Thursday end of class- 10 points in Homework (all-or-nothing points; late work will not be accepted. If you are absent that day, email it to Mrs. Hanson at by 3:35 Thursday).
· Write a draft of a Closing Statement that could be used for the trial.
· This is the last word you will have with the jury. Use convincing, colorful language to remind them why your argument is the best one. Must be typed and double-spaced.
· Turn in one hard copy to on Thursday.
