Basic PAL/ASD Basketball Rules
- Two teams each have five players on the court at one time. Each team should have a minimum of one female player on the court at all times. The makeup of each team should consist of at least 10 and no more than 15 boys and girls.
- Teams will have an even amount of talent. Do not “stack” teams. Each school’s team will have good and beginner level players on each team.
- The basketball player equipment is quite simple. Players should wear comfortable sneakers, socks, shorts and a T Shirt supplied by PAL/ASD.
- Each team tries to score by shooting the basketball through the hoop.
- Each team tries to prevent their opponent from scoring by stealing the ball or blocking a shot.
- The ball is moved down the court by either passing it to a teammate or dribbling it.
- The game continues until a basket is scored or the ball goes out of bounds. The opposite team would then gain possession of the ball.
- The PAL/ASD league plays two ten minute halves, with a running clock. There is a 5 minute half time. Each team is allowed one time out per half. Everyone plays and the players are substituted on the fly with the clock running. Time does not stop.
- There is no full court press. Once the opposing team obtains possession, the defense needs to return to defend its basket.
- Standings-Tie head to head/3 way tie-use points against and points for.
- League Play-Overtime-5 minute OT period and if still tied then each player from each team will take a basket shot to determine a winner. Team is determined by players on court when time ends.
- Playoffs-5 minute OT period and if still tied then another 5 minute OT period. If still tied then each player from each team will take a basket shot to determine a winner. Team is determined by players on court when time ends for second OT period.
PAL/ASD Basketball Rules – Violations
- Play stops on all rules violations. Time will continue to run unless the referee stops the clock.
- The opponent gains possession of the ball after a violation. No jump shots.
- Some of the more common ball handling violations are: charging, double dribble, back court, and traveling.
- There are no time violations such as 3 seconds in the lane, 5 seconds in possession of the basketball, 5 seconds on an inbound play, or 10 seconds in the backcourt with the basketball.
PAL/ASD Basketball Rules - Fouls
- Play stops on all fouls.
- A foul is committed when a player initiates illegal contact with an opposing player.
- Fouls are committed by both offensive and defensive players, but more commonly by a defender.
- After a foul is committed, the opposing team gains possession of the ball. If a player is called for several fouls in a half, he/she will sit for the remainder of the half or may be removed immediately and sat by a referee and/or coach.
- Some of the more common fouls are: Blocking, Charging, Holding, Illegal Screen, Over-the-Back, Reaching In, Shooting Fouls, and Tripping.
PAL/ASD Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is a condition of membership to PAL/ASD basketball program for all players, parents, and coaches. Abusive and foul language, obscene gestures, racially insensitive remarks or other inappropriate remarks/gestures, will not be tolerated!! Do not damage, touch or take other peoples belongings.
Parents
- Teach and practice good sportsmanship at all games and practices. You are a role model for your child.
- Respect the officials and coaches.
- Do not criticize other players regardless of the circumstance.
- Support the coaches positively. Let them coach the children and do not interfere in a practice or a game, by offering advice to coach or your child.
- Emphasize the fun of the game and the team.
Players
- Respect your teammates, coaches, officials, and opponents at all times.
- Give 100% effort at each practice and game.
- If you do not go to school, then you can’t show up to practice or a game and expect to participate.
- Good behavior is expected at all practices and games. Bad behavior will result in the coach deciding to have you sit out a game or more.
- Continuous bad behavior or disrespect will result in the player being expelled form PAL/ASD program
- Support and encourage your teammates. Set a positive example.
- Always be well behaved and display good sportsmanship.
- Don’t be afraid of making a mistake. That is part of learning.
- Learn from your coaches; practice hard; play smart; Have Fun!!
Coaches
- A coach is a role model, who must act with the highest moral character possible.
- A coach must be positive and constructive to all players.
- Respect the officials decisions.
- Teach the rules of the game and abide by those rules in practices and games.
- Instruct the players in a sensible tone of voice. Do not scream at them with an angry tone of voice.
- Please teach and practice good sportsmanship at all games and practices.
- Be modest in victory and gracious in defeat.
- Coaches are expected to be a positive role model, and to set an example for players, parents, referees and other coaches. To that end –
- The use of profane, obscene, or vulgar language or gestures is prohibited.
- Directing players to engage in the intentional use of any rough tactics, or intimidating play, or bending the rules to gain an advantage is prohibited.
- Strive to develop the player’s appreciation of the game
- Conduct practices/games in the spirit of enjoyment and learning.
