Basic PAL/ASD Basketball Rules

  • Two teams each have five players on the court at one time. Each team should have a minimum of one female player on the court at all times. The makeup of each team should consist of at least 10 and no more than 15 boys and girls.
  • Teams will have an even amount of talent. Do not “stack” teams. Each school’s team will have good and beginner level players on each team.
  • The basketball player equipment is quite simple. Players should wear comfortable sneakers, socks, shorts and a T Shirt supplied by PAL/ASD.
  • Each team tries to score by shooting the basketball through the hoop.
  • Each team tries to prevent their opponent from scoring by stealing the ball or blocking a shot.
  • The ball is moved down the court by either passing it to a teammate or dribbling it.
  • The game continues until a basket is scored or the ball goes out of bounds. The opposite team would then gain possession of the ball.
  • The PAL/ASD league plays two ten minute halves, with a running clock. There is a 5 minute half time. Each team is allowed one time out per half. Everyone plays and the players are substituted on the fly with the clock running. Time does not stop.
  • There is no full court press. Once the opposing team obtains possession, the defense needs to return to defend its basket.
  • Standings-Tie head to head/3 way tie-use points against and points for.
  • League Play-Overtime-5 minute OT period and if still tied then each player from each team will take a basket shot to determine a winner. Team is determined by players on court when time ends.
  • Playoffs-5 minute OT period and if still tied then another 5 minute OT period. If still tied then each player from each team will take a basket shot to determine a winner. Team is determined by players on court when time ends for second OT period.
