Basic Operations For the Garmin GPSmap60-C GPS Receiver

Turn Unit On- Press holdPowerbutton (top of unit next to antenna)

- Unit comes on and searches for satellites (wait…)

- Opens to Satellite screen with theLocationand

AccuracyEstimate at the of the screen

Turn Unit Off- Press and hold thePower button (top of unit)

Switch Screens- Press Page button (on right side) to switch between the

5 Main GPSmap60Screens:

Satellite– skyplot of satellites satellite strength

Trip Computer– Info on speed, bearing, ETA, etc.

Map– w/waypoints & cities, can pan/zoom

Compass– w/info on speed, ETA, etc.

Main Menu– settings, manage tracks, etc.

* Note: the GPSmap60-CS also has an Altimeter screen

Navigatingwithin the GPSmap60 Screens and Selecting Items

- Use the RockerButton(large, center button w/arrows)

to “navigate” Up-Down-Left-Right to highlight items

- Press ENTR (Enter)buttonto select a highlighted item

Zoom In/Out(on the Map screen)

- Use theOUT button (upper right) to Zoom Out

- Use theIN button (upper left) to Zoom In

Backlight On/Off- With unit on, press Power button (top) once briefly

- Use Rockerbutton to adjust up/down as desired

- Backlight goes off in 15 seconds (or press ENTR)

Change Units- Main Menu screen

- Select Setup, select Units

Recommended for Position Format:

UTM UPS,hddd.dddddº or hdddºmm’ss.s”

- Adjust Map Datum, and Distance, etc. units as desired

Time of Day- Bottom of Main Menu screen

Check Battery- Top of anyscreen

Set Battery Type- Main Menu screen – Select Setup – Select System

- Under Battery Type, choose either:

Alkaline (disposable) or

NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride – Rechargeable)

Change Battery- Lift metal loop on back of unit

- Turn loop counterclockwise 1/4 turn

- Remove back cover, replace batteries (2 AA)

- Replace cover, turn loop clockwise 1/4 turn and fold flat

* * * Turn Unit OFF when not in use to save battery * * *

How to CREATE a Waypoint

Press Markbutton- Use Rockerbuttonto highlight OK and press ENTR

Optional (BEFORE choosing OK) from the Mark Waypoint screen:

Enter a Name for the new waypoint

- Use RockerENTRbuttons to highlight the name at the

top of screen (by default a number 001, 002, etc)

- Use RockerENTRbuttonsto select letters (to ‘type’)

- When done entering letters, highlight OKon the

keyboard press ENTRto close keyboard screen

Choose an Icon to represent the new waypoint on the map

- Use RockerENTRbuttons to select the marker

symbol(by default a flag, next to name)

- Use RockerENTRbuttons toselect an icon

Average multiple positions for better accuracy

- Use RockerENTRbuttons to select AVG

- Wait… (counter = # of positions to be averaged)

- Use RockerENTRbuttons to select SAVE

- Make sure you hit OK (see below) to Record Waypoint

Record Waypoint- (this is not Optional and must be done in addition to any of the Optional steps above)

- Use RockerENTRbuttons to selectOK at the bottom of theMark Waypoint screen

How to FIND a Waypoint

Press Findbutton- Use RockerENTRbuttons to select Waypoints

- Use RockerENTRbuttons to select desired waypoint

- Use RockerENTRbuttons to select Go toorMap

Go To begins navigation directions on Map Screen

How to CREATEor MOVE a Waypoint for Somewhere Else

(A Location Other than Where you Are)

Create a New Waypoint From the Map Screen

-Use the Rocker to move the cursor (arrow) to the location where you want a new Waypoint

-Press the Entr button

-Unless your cursor is positioned above an existing waypoint, you should be asked if you wish to create a waypoint. Highlight Yes and press Entr.

-If your cursor was too close to an existing feature than the screen will simply give you the properties for that Waypoint or feature. In this case you’ll need to locate your new Waypoint somewhere else (nearby) and Move it to the desired location (see below)

Move an Exiting Waypoint

Create a Waypoint (either for your current location, using the Mark/Entr buttons, or by using the cursor as described above)

From the Map Screen

-Use the Rocker to move the cursor (arrow) over the Waypoint to be moved

-When the cursor is right over the Waypoint the Waypoint symbol will change (a halo is added)

-Press the Entr button

-The cursor should now have the word MOVE below it

-Use the Rocker buttons to move the cursor

-Press the Entr button to choose the new location for the Waypoint

How to DELETE Waypoints(recommended before recording your data)

Delete A Single Waypoint:

- Press the FIND button and select Waypoints

- Use RockerENTRbuttons to highlight the desired

Waypoint (to be deleted)

- Use RockerENTRbuttons to select Delete

Delete Multiple Waypoints:

- Press the FIND button and select Waypoints

- Press the MENU button

- Use RockerENTRto select Delete

- Choose All Symbols or a desired Symbol category

Note: if you wish to delete a group of waypoints that use the same

symbol icon as other waypoints, you will need to first change the

symbols to a unique icon. Otherwise, all symbols w/the same icon

will be deleted.

How to DELETE Tracks (Line Features)

(recommended before recording your data)

Delete A Track:- From the Main Menu, select Tracks

- On the Tracks screen, select a specific track

- On the Saved Track screen, select Delete

Delete All Tracks:- On the Tracks screen, press the MENU button

- Use RockerENTRto select Delete All Saved

How to Create a Track (as a Line Features)

By default, the GPSmap60 records a ‘track log’ of everywhere you go when the unit is turned on. To record a single line feature:

Main Menu Page- Use RockerENTRbuttons to select Tracks

To Turn Track LogOnor Off

- In Tracks screen, beside Track Log:

Use RockerENTRbuttons to select On or Off

Clear Tracks (delete existing track log)

- In Tracks screen, Use RockerENTRto select Clear

Record Line Feature (Track):

- Optional: Clear existing track log

- Make sure Track Log is turned On

- Begin traveling the line you wish to record.

Note that screens can changed and waypoints can be entered/found along the way, but you MUST return to the Track screen to complete the line.

Finish/Save Track:

- In Tracks screen, Use RockerENTRto select Save

- Optional: In Saved Track screen:

- Use RockerENTRto select(& change) Name

- Use RockerENTRto select(& change) Color

- Use RockerENTRto select Show on Map

- Use RockerENTRto select OK

- In the Tracks screen, make sure your newly saved

track is listed in the Saved Tracks list

-IF you click on Map instead of OK you will go to the Map screen and be able to see you track but you have not saved it – you MUST hit OK from the Saved Track screen. Recommended: Hit OK to save your track, then from the standard Tracks screen select your newly saved track from the list, press ENTR and then choose Map to view your track.

Optionally Clear existing track log before recording another line feature
