MULTIPLICATION FACTS INFORMATION

As your child enters 5th grade and begins their exploration into new math concepts and skills, you will notice much revolves around the foundation of knowing the basic multiplication and division facts. Your child has been exposed to the basic facts in previous years, but it is now of utmost importance they are able to apply and use these facts in their everyday mathproblem solving. Memorizing does play a part in the process, but taking it to the next level of applicationis the direction we will be heading. Your child should be studying or reviewing these facts nightly until mastery is achieved, facts 0-12, via apps, websites, flashcards, games, etc. We have shared the pyramid on the back side of this paper with your child, visually showing the students that out of all the 0-12 facts, they really are only learning those on the chart. All other facts are the same (ie: 3 x 4 =4 x 3) We will begin weekly timed multiplication tests with mastery of each cluster (0-5, 5-9, 9-12, 0-12) Your child will have the opportunity to ‘test out’ of each cluster within this next week. If they show 90% mastery on their cluster of choice, they will begin their timed tests at the next level. If 90% is not mastered, your child will bump down in clusters until success is obtained. A homework packet will be given to your child to practice before their next assessment based upon the cluster he/she is working on. A grade will be given at the end of each grading period based upon your child’s performance. If your child tests out during Quarter 1, they will be required to confirm their mastery once again each quarter thereafter. If your child can memorize their basic facts they will be on track to be very successful with long division, multi digit multiplication, and fractions. Mastery of all facts will earn membership into the “100 Grand” candy bar club.

Just another reminder, your child will have math homework Monday through Thursday and at times on Friday. They will often times begin working on their homework during math and may even finish during intervention time at the end of the day. If you would like to review it with them please encourage them to bring it home each night before turning it in the next day. Thanks again for all of your support and help with your child’s education.

Happy Math Facts,
