Basic Lacrosse Rules and Tips

·  Any defensive players can check their attackers once they enter the defensive zone (past the attack or rag line) as long as the opposing team is in possession of the ball.

·  Make line changes only when we have possession of the ball and are moving up the floor on offense.

·  During a face off, line up next to your opponent stick to stick with stick in a shovel position.

·  Goalie has 5 seconds to get ball out of crease. The goalie should step to the side of the net when making a pass.

·  On a penalty kill a team has 10 seconds to move the ball past the center line.

·  Put ball down on the floor do not roll ground, when there is a change in possession.

·  Don’t leave bench on a shift change until the other player has at least one foot in the exchange zone.

·  When our goalie has possession of the ball and needs help, go into the crease to get ball, if necessary.

·  Don’t step into the opposing goalie’s crease at any time or possession will be lost.

·  When we loose possession of the ball, get to the defensive zone as soon a possible, line up along the 24 ft line and prepare to pick up an opposing player. Call out the opposing player’s number and keep them out of the prime scoring zone.

·  One strong player will press and cover the opposing team’s ball carrier.

·  Short hard shifts; then come off.

·  Keep stick up in the ready position at all times and call for your passes.

·  Keep two hands on the stick at all times for maximum ball and stick control and to avoid interference calls.

·  Move your feet to keep your opponent in front of you. Keep stick in front of your opponent. Do not swing or lunge with your stick and never check from behind on the numbers.

·  On defense play your opponent stick to stick and one step behind and one step to the middle. Keep knees bent and feet moving.

·  Angle and channel attacker away from net and prime scoring area.

·  Keep stick to side and in-front of attacker to avoid hitting from behind.

·  Dodge around or roll-off an opposing player, don’t try to go through them.

·  Avoid violent checks to the boards.

·  During a loose ball play the ball not the person to avoid loss of possession.

·  On offense use v-cuts and jab steps to distract the defender and create open spaces and scoring opportunities. Look to replace open spots as cuts are made.

·  When rolling off a defender roll off with your back, keeping ball protected and roll towards the butt end of the defenders stick.
