Partners Training Program and Application Information

The Partners Training Program is a partnership between North Carolina Central University and UNC-Chapel Hill. It is designed to introduce undergraduate students to either cancer laboratory research or to the field of public health through an academic year research assistantship to be followed by an intensive summer experience.Students accepted into the program must make a two-year commitment.

Academic Year

Students will begin their training in the spring of 2018. They will be assigned to a cancer biology or public health research project at NCCU where they will work as research assistants and receive a stipend of $1,600 per semester (may be prorated depending on month of acceptance into the program). In addition, students will attend monthly interdisciplinary journal club, dinner meetings where they will share their research with each other.

Summer

Students in the Basic Cancer Laboratory Research component will participate in a ten-week summer research program at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Students in the Public Health Research component will participate in a 10-week summer program that will begin with a two-week intensive orientation to public health at Morehouse College in Atlanta, followed by an eight-week research assistantship with a public health research study on cancer at the UNC Gillings School of Public Health.

Both programs will include a variety of professional development activities, including journal clubs, networking opportunities, and mentoring by doctoral students in a basic science or public health discipline.

During this summer experience students will reside in housing on the UNC campus at no cost. They will have access to UNC recreational facilities and other campus resources. They will receive a stipend of $5,000.The summer program will begin in May and end in July. Specific program dates will be announced at a later time.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

Be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Be enrolled at NCCU at the time of application – as a sophomore if applying for the Public Health Research experience or as a freshman or sophomore if applying for the Basic Cancer Laboratory Research experience.

Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above at the time of application. Basic Cancer Research applicants must have completed OR in the process of completing an introductory biology (BIOL 1201 or 1202) and introductory chemistry (CHEM 1100) in the Spring 2018 semester. It is also preferred that applicants have organic chemistry by May, 2018. These classes should be listed on the application as relevant courses.

How to apply

Step 1: Complete the attached application form.

Step 2: Compose a 1-2 page personal statement explaining

why you are applying for this internship,

your research experience, and

your educational and career goals.

Statements should be typed in 12-point font, single spaced, with 1-inch margins.

Step 3: Submit current transcript (BANNER printout acceptable). Transfer students must alsosubmit official transcript(s) from their previous schools.

Step 4: Request two letters of recommendation from NCCU faculty. These must be sealed andattached to your application.

Step 5: Hand deliver your application packetby 4:00pm on Monday Dec. 4th, 2017 to: Dr. Wendy Grillo, 2255 Mary Townes Science Building.
