OH! WOW!

Based on the game “Spoons”

Object of the Game:

·  to review for a quiz

·  to collect matches

·  to have the fewest marks on the OH! WOW! score sheet at the end of the class

·  to have fun!

Supplies Needed:

·  52 sticky labels per group of 4 (pre-cut into 4 sets of 6 and 4 sets of 7)

·  pens

·  decks of cards (1 per group of 4)

·  cut-up sponges (or your choice of what will be grabbed)

·  score sheet (1 per group)

Brainstorm with the class, matching terms that they are currently studying (e.g., state/its capital, word/definition, math fact/its answer, word/picture that is that word, compound words, etc.)

As students name the match, write/project the matches for all to see. Once 26 matches have been projected, number/block off the matches (1-6, 7-13, 14-20, and 21-26).

Card Preparation (Teacher could have these pre-made.):

The preparation of these cards is a learning strategy.

Divide the class into groups of four and designate who student #1, student #2, student #3, and student #4 will be. Pass out labels to the students—two students receive two sets of 6, and two students receive two sets of 7 (for a total of 52 labels). Based on the projected numbered pairs that were just brainstormed, assign pairs to students. In pen, student 1 writes pairs 1-6; student 2 writes pairs 7-13; student 3 writes pairs 14-20, and student 4 writes pairs 21-26. Once labels are written, choose one of the students to deal 12 cards to those who wrote six matches and 14 cards to those students who wrote seven matches. Students then peel the labels and place them on their cards—teacher can show where labels should be placed. Once all cards are labeled, there should be a deck of 52 labeled cards (26 matches).

Preparing for Play:

Designate “jobs” to players

1—shuffler

2—first person to deal (next dealer to the left of this player)

3—scorekeeper

4—sponge arranger (one fewer than number of players)

How to Play:

Sponge Arranger places sponges in the middle of the table. First dealer deals four cards to each player (label side down/number or face card side up). Dealer begins by looking at the first card at the top of the deck; if he/she decides to keep the card, he/she chooses one card to discard/pass to the next player. The next player either keeps this card or passes it. This process continues from player to player. Each player should have only 4 cards in his/her hand at one time. Once a player gets two matches, he/she quietly picks up a sponge and continues the game—others grab a sponge once they realize a sponge is missing. The player who does not get a sponge in time gets a mark on the score sheet in the appropriate box. The player who initially grabbed the sponge must show his/her matches to the group for verification. If the matches do not correspond, this player also gets a mark on the score sheet.

Game begins again once the cards are shuffled, sponges are in place, and the dealer deals four cards to each player.

*If there are no matches after the entire deck is used, the dealer uses the discard pile and begins again. Once again, the player who does not grab a sponge in time will receive a mark on the score sheet.

The person with the fewest marks on the OH! WOW! score sheet at the end of class is the winner of the game.
