Information for Candidates

Petroc is a high performing, entrepreneurial and inclusive College of Further and Higher Education based in North Devon and Mid Devon, supporting the skills and development needs of the wider South West region through exciting, innovative and productive partnerships. Serving a predominantly rural population, Petroc provides broad- ranging, high quality education, training and development opportunities to meet the needs of the communities it serves. Our overriding aim is to be the first choice provider of education, training and skills for our communities.

As Petroc’s North Devon Campus is based in a remote, rural, geographically isolated area, the local community depends on the College to provide a broad education and training offer across all subject sector areas, all levels and all delivery modes. Therefore the College’s specialism is serving its community effectively. We provide an exceptional range of further and higher education programmes which, in line with our vision, will equip our communities for the future, economically, socially and culturally. In addition, the College offers opportunities for learning and personal development such as the National Citizen Service programme, community/recreational programmes and outreach activities and professional development programmes.

We have many things to be proud of at Petroc. Our students consistently produce record-breaking results and progress onto the country's leading universities, further training or employment. 2015/16 saw 3,770 learners enrol at Petroc, 7,771 part time learners studying courses and 808 Apprentices.

Our whole community is committed to driving forward educational success in further and higher education and we all strive to raise the aspirations, knowledge and skills of individuals, communities and businesses in Devon and beyond.

We believe in bringing out the very best in people through being open and responsive, stimulating fresh thinking and building both confidence and ambition; and our personality is summarised in our vision ‘Raising Aspirations, Realising Potential, Delivering Success’.

Petroc is central to the economic, social and cultural needs of our surrounding communities.. With a staff headcount of approximately 900, the college is one of the largest employers in the area. We pride ourselves on our forward thinking, enthusiastic and diverse staff who make Petroc a vibrant and friendly place that is both flexible and supportive for all.

Petroc delivers significant provision across all Skills Funding Agency (SFA) and Education Funding Agency (EFA) programme areas (except agriculture) in a wide range of academic, vocational, work based, recreational and Higher Educational subjects. Petroc works in close partnership with Plymouth University to bring higher education to North and Mid Devon. North Devon is one of the furthest areas from a Higher Education Institution in the country and Petroc’s HNC, Foundation degree, Bachelor degree, Higher and Degree Apprenticeships, delivered from our developing University Centre, serve demand in the area. With the nearest University 50 miles away, Petroc’s Brannams Campus in Barnstaple has seen a very large increase in Higher Education and further expansion is planned through the Mid Devon Campus.

Our students come from Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset and, through distance learning, areas far beyond South West England. Strong links are maintained with all schools and community colleges, as well as other institutions, to ensure comprehensive provision for all young people, adults and employers in the area.

Petroc is one of the 106 colleges nationally that were awarded the new Teaching Excellence Framework and awarded Petroc ‘Silver’ status. When ranked with local Universities, Petroc’s silver award demonstrates the quality of the learning in North Devon and Mid Devon. Falmouth and Exeter Universities were awarded Gold, Petroc, the Universities of Bristol and St Mark and St John awarded silver and University of Plymouth awarded Bronze.

Over the past five years, we have secured over £20 million of investment to transform large parts of our campuses and support the delivery of excellent teaching and learning. We recognise and highly value the importance of investing in our College, to ensure our students have the best possible experience in inspirational, modern and industry standard facilities.

The Engineering Centre of Excellence was officially opened by former student and McLaren engineer, Richard Yeo in 2015. This outstanding facility houses the latest equipment for students on a wide variety of engineering and manufacturing courses, and meets the local demand for specialist training.

The Lifestyle Centre was completed during the summer of 2016, this facility supports students on Hospitality & Catering, Hand & Beauty and Travel & Tourism. It houses a specialist travel and tourism air cabin training room and commercial training kitchens, plus luxury hair and beauty salons and The Taw Restaurant – which are open to the public throughout the year.

Now would be an exciting time to join the College as we continue to push the boundaries of educational excellence and maximise our potential to serve our communities.

In November 2015 The Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) recognised the achievements of Petroc by grading the college as ‘good’.
