Upgrade Instructions
In addition to travel time, it should take a technician an estimated 1 hour, maximum, for a software update per the instructions provided in the Update procedures section starting on page 5. Service is interrupted for approximately 10-15 minutes while the update takes place.
The update instructions in this document are applicable only when updating the load on a configuration already running Avaya Communication Manager Release 1.1 or 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 or 1.2 or 1.3 or 1.3.1, with a valid license file installed. Applying this QPPCN does not require a new license file. However, Adding features or changing the location of the S8300 MEDIA SERVER or changing out the G700 MEDIA GATEWAY in which the S8700 MEDIA SERVER resides requires the creation and installation of a license file using the Remote Feature Activation (RFA) process. See the RFA web site at for further information. See the RFA Users Guide, chapter 5, on the aforementioned web site.
Avaya Site Administration version 1.11.05 is the minimum required version of the network administration solution for AvayaCommunication Manager Release 1.1 or 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 or 1.2 or 1.3 or 1.3.1, with an Avaya S8300 MEDIA SERVER (hereafter Communication Manager S8300 1.1 or 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 or 1.2 or 1.3 or 1.3.1). Field trial and EI (Early Introduction) loads of the Communication Manager software are not officially supported by the Avaya Site Administration tool.
After upgrading an S8300 MEDIA SERVER to Communication Manager 1.3.2, it is important to check the support website at for the latest software updates (patches). These updates/patches and instructions for installing these updates/patches can be found at the following path on the aforementioned support website:

Update process for S8700 with LSPs
This section applies only to S8700 MEDIA SERVERs with LSPs (Local Survivable Processors). Customers with this configuration need to update both the S8700 MEDIA SERVERs and the LSPs. The process in this section explains how to do so.
Overview
The customer receives the S8700 and S8300 CDs and uses them to upload the upgrade files onto both S8700 MEDIA SERVERs and all LSPs. After completion of the uploads, the customer contacts Avaya to schedule an on-site technician visit. Avaya verifies that the upload has occurred, and dispatches a technician who upgrades one LSP (including its G700-related firmware) and the S8700 MEDIA SERVERs. The customer observes the on-site technician’s performance of this upgrade. The customer upgrades any remaining LSPs and any G700 MEDIA GATEWAYs.
Steps
Step / Who / Action / Notes1 / Customer / Contact Avaya TSO or GSO to request both QPPCN 1365b, Supplement 5, and QPPCN 1366b, Supplement 5. / Both QPPCNs are needed because 1365B provides the CD containing the upgrade file for the S8700 MEDIA SERVERs, and 1366B provides the CD containing the upgrade file for the LSPs.
2 / Customer / Download the latest patch to your laptop or other computer from the Web. / To access the latest patch:
A.Go to and click Software & Firmware Downloads.
B.Scroll down to Media Gateways and Media Servers and click S8700 MEDIA SERVER.
C.Click Software Downloads, and then Avaya™ Communication Manager Software Patches for CM 1.3.2. (If there is no1.3.2link available to click, then there is no patch currently required.)
D.Click the file name that ends in ‘tar.gz”.
3 / Customer / Upload the S8700 upgrade file to both S8700 MEDIA SERVERs from the S8700 CD. / For detailed instructions:
A.Go to and click Product Documentation.
B.In the list on the left, click Communications Systems.
C.Scroll down to Media Gateways and Media Servers and, under S8700 MEDIA SERVER, click 1.3.2.
D.Under the heading Collections, click Avaya™ S8300 and Avaya™ S8700 MEDIA SERVER Library, and then click the link under Download File.
E.Click S8700 MEDIA SERVER with MCC1/SCC1 Media Gateways, and then click the Upgrading Tab at the top.
F.In the list on the left, click Upgrading Software—Existing Installation.
G.In the right panel, scroll down and click Installing the software—using the Web interface.
H.Scroll down to Upload software files to media server and follow the instructions in that section for both S8700 MEDIA SERVERs.
You must log into the S8700 Web interface with a browser in order to select Upload Files to Server (via browser).
Upload all files from the load folder on the CD. To do this use multiple Browse buttons, one for each file, and then click Load File to transfer all the files at once.
If the S8700 MEDIA SERVERs are not on site, you can follow the instructions from an administration computer. The second step in the instructions refers to the patch you downloaded in our Step 2, above.
4 / Customer / Upload the S8300 upgrade file to all LSPs from the S8300 CD. / Remember to remove the S8700 CD and insert the S8300 CD.
For detailed instructions:
A.In the same document you were using in Step 3, click the Home button in the bottom right corner.
B..Click S8300 MEDIA SERVER and G700 MEDIA GATEWAY, and then click the Installing tab at the top.
C.In the list on the left, click Upgrading an Existing G700 with an S8300 (Primary Controller or Local Survivable Processor) and then click the ►that appears below it.
D.Click Load New Software on the S8300. You may need to scroll down to find it.
E.Scroll down in the text to Transfer Files from a CD or Hard Drive of Laptop and follow the instructions in that section.
As in Step 3, you must log into the LSP Web interface with a browser. Be sure to upload the correct file: its name begins with “S8300”, not “G700”.
If the LSPs are not on site, you can follow the instructions from an administration computer. This is similar to the process in Step 3 and uses the same patch. Be sure to upload the patch.
5 / Customer / Call the Avaya TSO or GSO to schedule a technician visit for Communication Manager upgrade and firmware update. / If the customer has more than one LSP, the customer identifies a target LSP for Avaya to upgrade. It is the customer’s responsibility to upgrade all other LSPs and G700 MEDIA GATEWAYs after observing the upgrade of the target LSP.
6 / Avaya TSO or GSO / Remotely verify that the correct upgrade files are available on the S8700 MEDIA SERVERs and the target LSP. / Validate the checksums to ensure that the files are not corrupted.
7 / Customer / On the day of the scheduled upgrade, save translations on the S8700 MEDIA SERVER and back up both the S8700 MEDIA SERVERs and the target LSP. / Include Avaya Call Processing (ACP) Translations, Server and System Files, and Security Files in both the S8700 MEDIA SERVER backups and the LSP backup.
Note that the translations saved in this step are the translations that will remain on each LSP until it gets upgraded to match the S8700 upgrade that takes place in Step 12. The S8700 MEDIA SERVERs do not transmit translation changes to an LSP running a different version of the Communication Manager software than their own.
8 / Avaya technician / Arrive on site and gather necessary information from the customer. / The customer can expedite the upgrade by having this information ready in advance:
►IP address or DNS for—
both S8700 MEDIA SERVERs
target LSP
Media Gateway Processor (MGP)
VoIP
P330
►Location of LSP backup created in Step 7
►Date and time translations last saved (also in Step 7)
9 / Avaya technician / Via a customer computer with access to the media servers and the target LSP, upgrade the Communication Manager software on the target LSP, including applying the latest patch.
E..Click S8300 MEDIA SERVER and G700 MEDIA GATEWAY, and then click the Installing tab at the top.
F.In the list on the left, click Upgrading an Existing G700 with an S8300 (Primary Controller or Local Survivable Processor) and then click the ►that appears below it.
G.Click Install Software on the S8300 and follow the instructions in that section. (Skip the sections whose headings refer to Avaya Site Administration. They refer to an alternative method.)
Note that this documentation assumes that the upgrade takes place at the LSP’s physical location, which is not necessarily true in this case. Therefore:
Replace any reference to Services’ direct IP address with the customer IP address.
Substitute telnet or other appropriate techniques when the instructions call for connecting directly to the LSP.
The instructions also say to choose the option for supplying a license file later if you did not install one now. However, no new license is required, so choose the option for reusing the existing license file.
10 / Avaya technician / Via the customer computer, update the G700-related firmware for the target LSP. / Update the MGP, the P330, and the media modules.
For detailed instructions:
A.Continuing in the same document you were using in Step 9, look in the list of the left under Upgrading an Existing G700 with an S8300 (Primary Controller or Local Survivable Processor) and click Install New Firmware on the G700 MEDIA GATEWAY. You may need to scroll down to find it.
B.Follow the instructions in the sections Install New Firmware on the G700 MEDIA GATEWAY and Shutdown Communication Manager Software (Only When the S8300 is an LSP). At this point you have stopped the Communication Manager software on the LSP, and you are ready to upgrade the S8700 MEDIA SERVERs.
NOTE:If you have been notified that the firmware on the CD has been superceded, you can access the latest firmware on the Web:
i.Go to and click Software & Firmware Downloads.
ii.Scroll down to Media Gateways and Media Servers and click G700 MEDIA GATEWAY & S8300 MEDIA SERVER.
iii.Click Firmware Downloads, and then Avaya Media Server and Media Gateway Firmware Downloads.
11 / Avaya technician / Via the customer computer, upgrade the Communication Manager software on the S8700 MEDIA SERVERs, including applying the latest patch. / For detailed instructions:
A.In the same document you were using in Step 10A and 10B, click the Home button in the bottom right corner.
B.Click S8700 MEDIA SERVER with MCC1/SCC1 Media Gateway, and then click the Upgrading Tab at the top.
C.In the list on the left, click Upgrading Software—Existing Installation.
D.Click Getting ready to install the software—using the Web interface. Follow the instructions, moving along by clicking the right arrow at the lower right of the text.
E.Skip the section Upload software files to media server. They are already there. When you do the step to select the upgrade load from the Web interface, choose the file located on the /var/home/ftp directory of the S8700 MEDIA SERVER.
F.Keep going until you have completed the section Log off the administration applications.
If you use the document Avaya S8300 & S8700 MEDIA SERVER Patching Procedures, follow only steps 9-12 in the procedure for the S8700 MEDIA SERVER. The rest of the process is covered in the main upgrade process
12 / Avaya technician / Via the customer computer, make the security settings permanent. / This upgrade may have affected the security settings. To make the existing security settings permanent in the upgraded configuration:
A.Under the heading Security on the S8700 MEDIA SERVER’s Web interface, click Set LAN Security.
B.Click the Set Security button to make the settings permanent.
13 / Customer / Sign acceptance of the upgrade. / This concludes the involvement of the Avaya technician with the upgrade.
14 / Customer / Upgrade all remaining LSPs and G700 MEDIA GATEWAYs. / The customer is responsible for upgrading all other LSPs (G700-related firmware and Communication Manager software) and G700 MEDIA GATEWAYs (firmware). There is no technical reason not to upgrade multiple LSPs and G700s simultaneously. If one is doing so, however, it is important to close—not just minimize—all windows for one upgrade before beginning another. This reduces possible confusion as to which LSP (or G700) a window contains information about.
