Bar Council Training Scheme for Russian and Ukrainian lawyers

Opportunity for chambers to host lawyers

The International Committee is pleased to run the third year of its training scheme and is delighted to announce that we have extended the opportunity to young Ukrainian lawyers. The programme was launched in 2012 when a group of nine young Russian lawyers came to London for six weeks to participate in introductory training in the English legal system and to complete placements in chambers and law firms. This year’s programme will take place from 14 November to 2 December2016 in London (chambers placements are 21 November to 2 December) and will focus on the training of young Russian and Ukrainian lawyerswho have practised law for between 2 and 10 years, have excellent English and an interest in international practice. The programme includes a short bespoke academic programme provided by BPP Law School, attendance at the bilateral event Russian Law Week London 2016 and a series of legal seminars and vocational training sessions. This will be supplemented by visits to key legal institutions including courts, and a social and networking programme.

The programme aims to give the lawyers an understanding of the English legal system, the way barristers operate and how to instruct them whilst at the same time building the legal skills and knowledge required for international practice. The chambers selected to host the lawyers will gain a unique insight intothe Russian and/or Ukrainian legal market. In addition, useful business contacts will be established between lawyers of both jurisdictions.

The International Committee is seeking barristers’ chambers willing to host these Russian and Ukrainian lawyers for two weeks, from 21 November to 2 December 2016.Interested chambers must have an international element to their practice, and should be able to offer one or preferably two mentors to guide the Russian and/or Ukrainian lawyer through their placement. Placements are similar in substance to a mini pupillage and should include some of the following elements:

  • Visiting different types of court
  • An insight into case management
  • Discussion of ethics, code of conduct and some of the challenges of practice
  • Introduction to the operation of chambers
  • The opportunity to read and research and do written work
  • Participation in meetings, conferences and chambers social events

If you are interested in hosting a lawyer, please complete the below form and send it to Petra Majzlikova; , by 17:00 on Friday 21 October. If you have any queries regarding the programme, please contact Jessica Crofts-Lawrence at or on 0207 611 1357.
