EARTH WEEK: takes place during the coming week. The activities of this week help us to be aware of our environment and to make some changes in our lifestyle, to help improve our environment for ourselves and future generations. The theme of Earth Week this year is about Biodiversity, which is essentially about the variety of all life on earth. It provides people with food, fresh water and fuel. This really is the raw material that sustains life on earth. One important creature to biodiversity is the Bee. The loss of bees would be detrimental to biodiversity. Without bees to spread pollen, many plants including food crops would die. Bees transfer this pollen thereby fertilising the plant so that it can grow and produce fruit. The number of bees are declining because the natural habitat such as grassland, woodland and hedges are disappearing. How can we help? (a) we can grow plants in our gardens such as geraniums, mint, lavender and rosemary. (b) we can plant trees such as Crab apple, hazel and holly (c) we can do more composting (d) we can avoid use of pesticides (e) we can encourage the growth of wild flowers. As we finish we are mindful of the words of Pope Francis, “Christ can teach us and inspire us to work with generosity and tenderness in protecting this world which God has entrusted to us”. – Paragraph 242.
