COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students completing this course successfully will:

1.  Develop an understanding of the physical laws by which biological materials respond to various physical treatments involving mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical, and electromagnetic techniques and devices.

2.  Determine the terminology and the relationship between internal structure and the macroscopic properties of biological materials.

3.  Apply the fundamentals of engineering sciences to characterize the physical and rheological properties of biological materials.

4.  Demonstrate the effect of physical properties on the design of agricultural and food processing machines and processing systems.

5.  Identify techniques to quantify and determine engineering properties.

6.  Understand how history and culture interact with engineering to interact with the physical and rheological properties of biological materials.

7.  Understand the need for safety measures in the laboratory.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS: All students will be given homework assignments. Examinations over homework, labs and lectures will be given as scheduled. Assignments are due at the beginning of the period, one week after the assignment was made unless more precise instructions are given. No more than half credit will be given for assignments that are late. No credit will be given for assignments that are over one class period late. Students with appropriate excuses and prior arrangements with the instructor may reschedule examinations.

GRADING: Homework and Labs 50 %
Tests 30 %
Final 20 %

The final grade will be based on the total percentage of the above determined from the following table. The minimum required for a letter grade may be adjusted at the discretion of the instructor based on class performance. But the minimum will never exceed that set forth in the table below.

%-Range Grade
