Back to School Night
· All the students will receive a Rice Canyon key ring next week. This ring is for your child to keep the “spirit stick” badges he/she will receive throughout the next 6 years. For example, kindergarten won the food drive contest last year. Each kindergarten student received an embroidered spirit stick that says “Food Drive” in colorful lettering. Please keep track of your child’s key ring. There is a $3 replacement cost.
· You will receive a handwriting practice book. Please help your child use a proper grip and guide him/her as they write. Detailed instructions on how to form each letter are also found on the homework cover sheets.
· Be sure to look over the list of Common Core Standards you received on the first day of school. Your child will be assessed regularly to check for mastery and progress. We will conduct parent conferences with all parents at the end of the first trimester. If you would like to meet with us prior to that time let us know.
· All students that require English language instruction will participate in ELD for 20 min. daily. They will receive an additional 15 minutes using the ELD computer program. The other students will work on language art skills at this time.
· We reviewed the curriculum we use for Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science. Please let us know if you have any questions. The children will need to know 100 sight words by the end of the year. We will send home flash cards and a list of strategies to help you at home.
· We will make custom kindergarten t-shirts in January. It is a one-time only order.
· Volunteer badges are mandatory for classroom helpers and fieldtrip chaperones. Forms are available in the office.
· Library books are due on Tuesday (Rowe) Thursday (Haupert). We will send home reading “Book Bags” later in the year. Those books must be returned in the bag.
· Book Orders will go home periodically. They are a great value and our class earns points to purchase resources. You can also order online.
· Homework is designed to reinforce the skills we taught in class. Please do not do your child’s homework. If you need extra time due to illness or family issues, let us know. Teach your child the value of time management. Don’t wait until Wednesday night to do the entire packet. About 15 minutes a day is the goal.
· Every student will receive a Star Student Poster. Please help your child color it and return it the following Monday. We both have ours up as examples of different ways to do it.
· Please, Please, Please, Please, send lunch money in an envelope labeled with your child’s name.
· Label all clothing items. Once it gets cooler we end up with unclaimed jackets and the lost and found is a nasty place to dig for your child’s belongings.
