  1. Aims of the Programme

The programme will enable and support students to:
  • Advance their knowledge of Social Pedagogy philosophy and theory and its application to practice settings with children, young people and adults.
  • Critically apply the practice of social pedagogy to promote well-being as an approach to working within and across organisations.
  • Develop a critical understanding of the concepts of advocacy and participation and their use in working across different organisations
  • Consider how a focus on the social relations between and among staff and service users, and the use of dialogue and critical reflection, can help them to understand events and interactions in practice.
  • Critically evaluate and use creativity as a method of participatory practice with groups and organisations.
  • Critically apply sociological theory to practice and recognise the impact of culture, equality and diversity on their own lives, and the lives of people they work with.
  • Develop a critical understanding of social policy formation and innovative ways of supporting social change.
  • Critically appraise and assess the use of evidence in practice.
  • Develop the use of systemic thinking in relation to practice

A.Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the programme students will be able to:
A1. Identify and explain the key principles of social pedagogy, advocacy and participation.
A2. Explain the relevance of social pedagogy, advocacy and participation principles to working with individuals, groups and organisations.
A3. Explain the impact of social welfare law and policy for example adult and child care law, human rights, youth justice and equality law as applied to individuals, groups and organisations.
A4. Demonstrate knowledge of creative ways of engaging with service users.
A5. Identify the ways in which individuals are located within a social context.
Teaching and Learning Methods
This programme adopts a blended learning approach which includes modules delivered at the University, in residential settings, online modules and work based learning. Teaching and learning methods will integrate: lectures; workshops; small group work; self-directed study; reflective exercises and practical experience. This delivery plan provides students with the opportunity to develop and apply their understanding of social pedagogy theory, values and approaches.
Teaching will draw on interactive and experiential learning through creative and practical activities that let students experience the challenges around communication. This approach will also enable the group to apply their learning and reflect on their own value base, the use of role play, applied drama and case studies will encourage students to share practice examples from their own experience.
Assessment methods
Group presentations, posters and creative tasks and innovation projects. A combination of essays, exam, portfolios, written reflections and oral assessments with module tutors will also form a basis of the assessment approach.

15.Personal Development Planning
Personal Development Planning (PDP) is intended to provide a process by which students can reflect on their learning and plan for their personal and career development. The primary objective of PDP is to improve each student’s capacity to understand what and how they are learning, and to review, plan and take responsibility for their own learning. PDP will be facilitated through individual and group reflection, and group tutorials. The ability to reflect is central to the underpinning ethos of this programme. The course team will provide individual advice and discuss progress and future career or further study plans with students as a fundamental part of the tutorial role, and encourage students to make use of all of the University’s range of support services as and where appropriate.
16.Admissions criteria
  • 5 GCSE’s including grade C or above in Maths and English
  • Applicants will normally have two A’ Levels or equivalent;
  • Applicants will normally be practitioners in an area of youth work, social justice, social work, early years, community work or social care
  • An interview will establish the students suitability for the course
  • Non-standard applicants with significant experience will be considered via interview and may be required to undertake a piece of written work as part of the application process
  • Students where English is not the first language need to demonstrate their ability in the English language through obtaining an IELTS score of 6.5 or above or equivalent.

19.LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR EXIT AWARDS:

For each exit award available, list learning outcomes relating to the knowledge and understanding, subject specific skills, thinking, other skills relevant to employability and personal development that a typical student might be expected to gain as a result of successfully completing each level of a course of study.

For example, for a standard BA/BSc (Hons) award the exit award learning outcomes for CertHE (Level 4) and DipHE (Level 5), BA/BSc (Level 6) should be included; for a postgraduate Masters, this would normally be PGDip and PGCert.

Learning outcomes for the award of: Cert HE Social Pedagogy, Advocacy and Participation

At the end of Year 1 the programme will:

  • Enable students to understand the basic theory of social pedagogy as an approach to working with people.
  • Support students to develop an understanding of the concepts of advocacy and participation.
  • Support students to evaluate their life experiences, skills, knowledge and learning and reflect upon how this impacts on their relationship with others.
  • Enable students to engage with a range of creative learning approaches.
  • Enable students to understand core sociological theory in relation to diversity and equality

Overview of learning outcomes for the Cert HE Social Pedagogy, Advocacy and Participation:

The learning outcomes for year one of the programme are designed to provide students with an understanding of the central knowledge and theories related to the course. Year one learning outcomes also support students to reflect on their previous experience, and understand how these experiences affect their relationships with others.

Learning outcomes for the award of: Dip HE Social Pedagogy, Advocacy and Participation

At the end of year 2 the programme will:

  • Enable students to comprehend and apply the practice of social pedagogy as an approach to working with people in a practice setting
  • Support students to develop an understanding of the concepts of advocacy and participation and their application to practice with different groups of children, young people and adults.
  • Support students to apply reflective and communication skills to help them to understand events and interactions in practice.
  • Enable students to apply a range of creative learning approaches in practice and the use of space and environments to support change
  • Enable students to apply sociological theory and to reflect upon its impact on people’s ‘lifeworlds’

Overview of learning outcomes for the Dip HE Social Pedagogy, Advocacy and Participation:

The learning outcomes for year two of the programme are designed to offer students opportunities to demonstrate further understanding of knowledge and theory, values and skills by applying them to practice situations with different groups of children, young people and adults. Year two learning outcomes will also support students to develop criticalreflection skills to enable them to evaluate and guide events and interactions in practice.
