B1 Template for Lay Summary
We kindly ask you to consider the following aspects:
· The lay summary has to be written in English.
· It is important that you choose a generally understandable, non-academic language. The lay summary is primarily directed to a non-scientific readership. Please describe in clear, simple sentences what you would like to address in your research project.
· We kindly request you not to exceed the maximum number of characters and to transmit the lay summary as a document in MS Word to the Research Fund ().
Content of a lay summary
Project title
The title should accurately describe your project and not exceed 150 characters incl. spaces.
Photo
Coloured, with pixel size >4‘000, 300 dpi. The photo should be as representative as possible as well as catchy. It may show the researchers or the subject of research (for example microscopy or X-ray view). Symbolic figures or pictures in a context related to the object of research illustrating the rationale behind the research project are also possible. Please send a separate photo in JPG format.
Research management
Title, surname und first name, institution of the following persons (not more than 3):
1. Main applicant
2. Co-applicants
3. Partner institutions involved in the research project
Short title
Please choose a simple, easily understandable title to arouse the interest of a broader public for your research project – similar to a newspaper headline; max. 60 characters incl. spaces.
Synopsis (summary / lead text)
(ca. 200–300 characters incl. spaces)
Project description
(max. 2000 characters incl. spaces)
Please divide the project description into the following subsections:
- Context / background: Which current development in society leads to the main questions of the planned project? The aim is to describe the specific issue.
- Objectives and methods: Which objectives should be achieved? Which methods will be applied? Please describe the objectives and the applied methods in a language that is understandable for a non-scientific audience.
- Significance: What is the expected benefit and importance of the project? Which societal concerns and actors could possibly benefit from the results?
- Start and duration: Planned starting date and estimated duration of the project.
