Personal Statement
Summary of qualifications and reasons for running. My Strategy Experience
I was budget chief at Colgate Canada in 1977 and led the group that developed the Long Range Plan, which is what they called strategy. Colgate was big on acquisitions to develop new business, and I had done a lot of acquisition work for Colgate, and had written the global manual. I moved to Consumers Gas and set up the first strategic planning department in the company. I developed the process for the first strategic plan. Then I helped Consumers Gas sell and implement the process in other North American utilities. I also managed the new ventures business, which was a small outcome of the plan. From there I moved to Harlequin Enterprises (yes, the romance novel company) where I was the first director of strategic planning. I helped deal with some tough issues-what languages to expand into, and what business to close. I also did some internal consulting, and managed five businesses in Europe. Then I joined CIBC (a large Canadian Bank) as the strategist for the global Corporate, Commercial and other businesses. We restructured the bank. I moved into the information management area, and later joined the executive team as CFO that ran Commercial Banking. There I was a key participant in the annual strategy review for many years, and led many of the resulting projects. WhenI retired I became the Chairman & President of the Strategic Leadership Forum for three years (about 450 members). I have been a member of SLF since 1979. Since then I have worked on strategy with several organizations. My Finance Experience
I graduated with an MBA in Finance and Marketing from an entrepreneurial business school. I also earned my Certified Management Accountant designation (similar to a CPA in the US). I worked as a financial analyst at Procter & Gamble, and budget chief for Colgate Canada. I was the Finance Chair on the Board of Centennial College for several years, and I led the strategies that eliminated a severe deficit. At CIBC I served as Chief Financial Officer for Commercial Banking for eight years. I was also an internationally recognized customer profitability expert. We dramatically improved the profitability of the business, step by step.My Board Experience
