Bible Story:Jesus Calms the Storm

Please read the following story to the class or pick one of the other story options below:(Make sure to read the first blue section before beginning the story)

Before we start does everyone know what a miracle is?

  • Pause and let the kids answer
  • A miracle is something amazing that only God can do.

For the next few weeks we will be talking about all the miracles Jesus did that showed his AWESOME POWER!

The first miracle is Jesus Calming the Storm.

Evening came and Jesus was exhausted from teaching all day. He asked his disciples to get into a boat so they could cross the lake and get away from the crowds. As they took off, Jesus went to the back of the boat, put his head on a cushion and fell asleep.

All of sudden, a terrible storm came up with strong winds and crashing waves. No matter how hard the disciples tried, they couldn’t keep the boat from filling with water.

The disciples ran to the back of the boat in a panic to wake Jesus, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”

Jesus awoke, stood up and said to the wind and waves, “Quiet! Be still.” As soon as he said this the wind stopped blowing and the sea became calm. Then, Jesus asked them, “Why are you so afraid? Don’t you believe in me yet?”

The disciples just sat there amazed. They asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Questions continued on next page ->

Why do you think the disciples were so afraid?

  • Pause to let children answer. They thought they might be hurt or even die in the storm

Do you think you would have been scared if you were in the boat? Why?

  • Let the children answer why or why not.

Has anyone ever heard a scary loud storm before? What did you do when you were afraid?

  • Pause and let the children answer.

Did anyone tell the storm to stop? Did it work?

  • Pause and let the children answer
  • When Jesus calmed the storm he showed the disciples his awesome power. None of us can command a storm to stop. No man has that kind of power only God. As followers of Jesus we can use this awesome power. We might not be able to command the waves (through God can give us this power) but we can pray to God for safety and strength.
  • We are blessed because we have our awesome powerful God standing behind us and helping us conquer everything!

Closing Remark: Next Time when you are scared, worried or just unsure about something you can pray to God for him to stand with you and share his awesome power!

The storm shook you out the boat (Musical Chairs)

  1. Lay out enough chairs in a circle for each child minus one to be able to sit down.

  3. Let the children walk around the chairs while the music plays.
  4. When you stop the music the children must try to sit on the nearest chair.
  5. If they don’t get a seat they were tossed from the boat.
  6. Take away one chair each time a child is “tossed from the boat” and keep playing until there is only one child left.
  7. Explain that Jesus rescued those whose were tossed in the waves and replay the game as much as the kids want.
