Bursaries will be awarded under the following conditions:-

  1. Bursaries are open for competition to young people living in Ayrshire who are in attendance at any school where secondary education is provided, or left school after the date of the last competition for the bursaries and have not yet entered a university/college AND there is a financial need for support.
  1. One competitive university entrance bursary, and one competitive college entrance bursary, can be awarded each year respectively in East Ayrshire, North Ayrshire and South Ayrshire (6 bursaries).
  1. The bursaries are tenable at any university/college in Scotland.
  1. The standard bursary value is £1,000 payable annually in October.
  1. The bursaries are tenable for a period of four years or such lesser period as is necessary to enable the holders to complete their respective courses. The period of tenure may be extended by the Trust in any suitable case.
  1. When considering whether to award a bursary, the Trust will inquire into the financial circumstances of any candidate(s) to determine that there is a financial need for support.
  1. In respect of household income, the Trust may ask for the most recent award letter from the Department for Work and Pensions to be provided as verification of benefits received
  1. When considering whether to award a bursary, the governors shall obtain a report on the school record and examination results of any candidate(s).
  1. If more than one candidate is of sufficient attainment, the governing body shall award the bursary to the candidate who is of sufficient attainment and has the greatest financial need and is in their opinion likely to derive the greatest benefit therefrom.
  1. If only one candidate is of sufficient attainment and demonstrates financial need, the governors shall award the bursary to them.
  1. If no candidate is of sufficient attainment, the governors, if they are satisfied that special circumstances accounting for failure affected any candidate’s school results and that the said candidate is of sufficient promise to merit the award of a bursary, they shall award the bursary to such candidate.
  1. If the governors are satisfied that there is no candidate of sufficient attainment and financial need who will benefit from a bursary, they may not award any.
  1. If, having regard to the financial circumstances, a sum less than the standard bursary value is sufficient in the opinion of the governors to enable the candidate to derive the greatest benefit from a university/college education, they will award such smaller sum as they think fit. If in their opinion additional assistance is required, they will make such additional award as they think fit. If in their opinion there are no special circumstances affecting the case, they shall award the standard sum.
  1. Where a bursary has been awarded to a successful candidate, the governors will inquire into the financial circumstances each subsequent year of payment, to determine whether there continues to be a financial need for support. The governors may withdraw payment of a bursary where they determine that the successful candidate no longer has a financial need for support.
  1. Where a bursary has been awarded to a successful candidate, the candidate each subsequent year of payment, is required to obtain a report from the course provider confirming that they are making satisfactory progress, failing which, the bursary may be withdrawn.
