In 1980, Mary Catherine Swanson created the AVID program in San Diego as an answer to the problem of enrolling under-served students in post-secondary education and reaching students in the middle. Today AVID has been adopted by nearly 4,500 schools in 45 states, the District of Columbia and 16 countries/territories, and serves approximately 400,000 students, grades 4-12.

If you have the dream of attending a four-year college after high school graduation, AVID is the program for you!

What do you bring to AVID?

Students need to bring a strong work ethic to AVID. They must be willing to complete their assignments and do their best in all of their classes.

What can AVID offer you?

AVID students receive support with their core classes and tutor assistance from their peers, teachers and college tutors.

AVID prepares students to enter and succeed in college by teaching basic skills needed to handle college courses and graduate.

What role do parents play?

Parent support is essential. AVID parents need to believe in the goals of AVID, and attend parent information sessions to learn about the college going process and the needs of their student.
