Autumn Termin Year 5…
A huge welcome back to school after what we hope was a fantastic break. We hope you all had a wonderful rest and are ready for the challenges of Year 5! Wecannot believe how quickly the summer has flown by and expect you enjoyed time together as a family. It is wonderful to hear about the stories of the holidays and some of the children’s achievements too. We are very impressed and proud of the children already. Be sure to keep visiting our class page on the website-work and comments made by the children will be regularly updated.
We have both spent time in school, preparing the classrooms and exciting lessons ready for what should be an exciting year. It has been an eventful summer for us both: Mrs. Gent getting married and Mrs Smith painting and decorating her home. Mrs Gent especially enjoyed reading and would recommend Time Travelling with a Hamster and the Series of Unfortunate Events books. Mrs Smith has enjoyed researching about The Vikings-ready for our learning this term- and visiting The National Space Centre in Leicester to get ready for our space topic later in the year.
As the children enter Upper Key Stage Two, they have much more responsibility; especially in being role models for the rest of the school. We are really proud of their behavior so far and in their demonstration of our school’s core values. Many children have relished the opportunity to apply to be playground leaders and we look forward to seeing who has been successful!
This year, the children will continue to build up their spelling and grammar knowledge as well as progress with times tables and mental arithmetic. We would like to see well rounded and confident children by the end of the year. This term begins the year with a focus on History – the Vikings. We will be looking into their mythology, legacy and art (among other things). We shall be charging over the adventure park to re-enact battles while also deepening our historical enquiry skills.
The children will be supported in school by Mrs. Gent, Mrs. Smith, Miss Cross and Miss Gray to ensure that everyone is able to reach their full potential this year. The children’s learning will benefit from the consolidation and confidence building activities set for homework.

Vikings:vicious or victorious?
For the whole of the Autumn term we will be studying through the topic of the Vikings, focusing on invaders in term one before moving on to settlers in term two. Working as Historians we will be gathering evidence from a range of sources and experiences to answer this key question. Homework to compliment this learning will be sent home as a project and we look forward to seeing how creative the children can be in their response to the tasks given. It is important, and we will expect it to be completed and handed in on time. Vikings will also lead our DT in school this term as children explore boats and then design and make their own Viking long ships. We will also enjoy learning sagas – while developing the ability to follow a score- which tell the tales of the Norse Gods.
Reading Books – These need to be in school daily, and will be changed as often as necessary, due to the increased length of some books children may choose to read. In line with the curriculum we suggest that children keep their books for longer and really get to know it well. Your child’s comprehension skills at this stage are vital and we encourage children to make a note of words that they do not know or understand so that they can independently research their meaning and synonyms to ensure a full understanding of text read.
Spellings – will be set on a Friday and will be tested on the following Friday. We advise they use a Look, Cover, Check as set out (copying the joined handwriting) and the children are welcome to make use of their spelling books for additional practice.
Times tables- In Year Five, we expect children toalready know their multiplication facts and as these underpin most of mathematics it would be beneficial for you to support the children by chanting and practicing them at home whenever possible. Timetables will be tested every Friday.
If you want to support your child further please explore the following websites over the term. If you find any others that are helpful, please let us know!
Mainly Maths, English and Science games and interactive activities. This site is also a great help with homework and key History facts.
Age appropriate, subject specific activities, revision activities, games, worksheets and experiments.
Wide ranging History resources to answer some of your key questions.
A great site for Maths games, perfect for revision.
We look forward to working with you all over the year, as we work together to educate your child. We love to hear about achievements outside of school so please do encourage your child to bring in certificates, trophies and other recognition of out of school activities to share with us.
