AUTOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE & LIGHT REPAIR

LESSON PLAN

Instructor: Edward A. Morris

Title: MLR Engines

Overview/Annotation: This lesson provides students with classroom and laboratory experiences in servicing gasoline engines. Topics include service and maintenance of engine system, cooling and lubrication systems.

Content Standards (Tasks):

ENGINE REPAIR

General

1. Researching applicable vehicle and service information, vehicle service history, service precautions, and technical service bulletins

2. Verify operation of the instrument panel engine warning indicators.

3. Inspect engine assembly for fuel, oil, coolant, and other leaks; determine necessary action.

4. Install engine covers using gaskets, seals, and sealers as required.

5. Remove and replace timing belt; verify correct camshaft timing.

6. Perform common fastener and thread repair, to include: remove broken bolt, restore internal and external threads, and repair internal threads with thread insert.

7. Identify hybrid vehicle internal combustion engine service precautions.

Cylinder Head and Valve Train

1. Adjust valves (mechanical or hydraulic lifters).

Lubrication and Cooling Systems

1. Perform cooling system pressure and dye tests to identify leaks; check coolant condition and level; inspect and test radiator, pressure cap, coolant recovery tank, and heater core; determine necessary action.

2. Inspect, replace, and adjust drive belts, tensioners, and pulleys; check pulley and belt alignment.

3. Remove, inspect, and replace thermostat and gasket/seal.

4. Inspect and test coolant; drain and recover coolant; flush and refill cooling system with recommended coolant; bleed air as required.

5. Perform engine oil and filter change.

Local/National Standards: This lesson incorporates all personal and environmental safety practices associated with clothing; eye protection; hand tools; power equipment; proper ventilation; and the handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals/materials in accordance with local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations.

Primary Learning Objectives(s): After completing this lesson, the student should be able to service and maintain gasoline engines and its systems. The student will demonstrate these competencies by completing assignments, repair orders, practical tests, and a written test.

Approximate Duration of the Lesson: Greater than 120 Minutes.

Materials and Equipment: Today’s Class, Shop Vehicles, Engines, Hand Tools & Equipment needed to perform tasks

Technology Resources: ALLDATA (Electronic Service Information), VCR/DVD Player, LCD Projector, Laptop

Background/Preparation: Students will need basic knowledge of the computer, electrical test equipment, and basic hand tools.

Procedures/Activities: 1. Have students’ complete MLR Engines lesson of Today’s Class.

2. Instructor will demonstrate procedures for completing content standards (tasks).

3. Students will perform content standards (tasks).

4. Instructor will assess student’s performance daily, before practical tests.

Assessment Strategies: Instructor will assess the students ability to perform tasks (practical tests), and work habits using daily lab grade sheets. Students will perform practical tests, quizzes, and a final test will be given.
