Mid-year NATEF Review

  • Mr. Lemond shared that the self-evaluation review has been submitted. He did receive an email of concern about the limited number of courses being offered, but hasn’t heard anything further after his response. He plans to follow up to be sure that nothing additionalis needed.

Progress Report

  • Mr. Kennison has already had 45% of students pass their first round of ASE certifications. Two students are scheduled to retest during this term, likely in April. This will allow any students who need a retest the opportunity for one more testing session before the school year ends. The State of Florida requires 20 days between tests when retakes are needed. Mr. Kennison stated that the program is going well, although one class has a lot of ESE students that need assistance and there hasn’t been a translator to assist. He feels that it’s been an interesting year and the advanced classes have been able to grow their knowledge by working on an engine-swap project. The students are going more in-depth in modules to go beyond the requirements of NATEF and really learn what will be needed to be superior technicians.
  • Ms. Jennings will go to Yulee High and work with Mr. Kennison to get registrations set up for testing for theApril and Maydates, and coordinate with guidance to make sure it doesn’t interfere with testing. She will research ASE to figure out if registration can take place online and coordinate with Ms. Bonewit and Ms. Gallager (test proctor) to organize this. Mr. Kennison will compile and provide to Ms. Bonewit the last names of the students with their first initial for registration purposes along with the dollar amount for the tests. Mr. Kennison will also print the roster for the level 3 and 4 programs and cross out duplicates and those certified.

Student Follow-up Form

  • Mr. Lemond suggested having a training for each student to assist in creating a LinkedIn profile. This would allow us to follow their career path once they graduate and aid their job search and networking opportunities
  • Mr. Kennison will send the follow up forms for students to Ms. Jennings.

Industry Outlook

  • Mr. Thompson hosted the Regional SkillsUSA Competition. He spent time with 11 students in the Diesel Program. He is interested in working with FSCJ to modify their schedule to allow non-local students the ability to participate. As it stands, the schedule is a traditional Mon-Thurs and he’d like to create a curriculum that would allow students to have long commutes for small segments of time. NASTF is a program geared towards independent shops, and they recently had a conference called “Vision”. They are focused on training and education, and the lack of effectiveness currently in place regarding curriculum and future employee pipeline. Mr. Thompson said that it was bringing up the same questions that he too has about how to bring new energy into this field.

Other Business

  • This summer Mr. Kennison will be attending the upcoming Florida Auto Dealer Training at Mid Florida Tech from June 13th-17th. Mr. Thompson will forward that information to Mr. Lemond and Mr. Kennison for planning purposes. Mr. Kennison will submit a green sheet to Ms. Bonewit for those dates.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:25am.

Respectfully submitted,

Leah Jennings
