AUTO INCENTIVES UP DOUBLE DIGITS

SALES SEEN DOWN AGAIN FOR OCTOBER

With consumer demand for new vehicles leveling off, automakers have been increasing incentives to move sheet metal off dealer lots. With manufacturers due to report October sales next week, TrueCar reports that incentive spending by automakers averaged an estimated$3,587per vehicle this month, up 15.7% from a year ago, although down 2.6% fromlast month.

"As retail demand plateaus automakers will be forced to make the critical decision to cut vehicle production or increase incentives," saidEric Lyman, TrueCar's chief industry analyst. "Planned reductions byFCA [Fiat Chrysler Automobiles]andFordindicate a more disciplined approach to sales strategies going forward that will support a healthy automotive market."

The dollar-value of incentives being offered to buyers varies widely by maker, although most were up double digits from a year ago. The highest average incentive is $6,671 by luxury maker BMW (the 2017 X5 is pictured)—up 33% from the incentives that BMW offered in October 2016, as calculated by TrueCar. Fellow German company Daimler AG was next at $4,548, although that was down 7.3% from a year ago.

The Detroit Three are next: General Motors offering $4,417, up 13.8%; Ford $4.404, up 29.9%; and FCA $4,388, up 22.9% from October 2015. Also above the $4K mark are Nissan at $4,109, up 15.3%, and Volkswagen AG at $4,035, up 4.8%.

The biggest percentage increase was by Subaru, which doesn’t make a lot of use of incentives to boost sales numbers. Even with a 62.6% increase over a year ago its average incentive is only $1,130—the lowest of any maker reported by TrueCar.

Both TrueCar and J.D.Power/LMC Automotive are predicting that new vehicle sales will be down for October. Power/LMC expects retail sales to be down 0.8% on a selling-day adjusted basis to just under 1.10 million units—the sixth down month this year. Trucks/SUVs account for 62.2%—an all-time record for a month. Total sales (including fleet) are projected at 1.35 million, down 0.2% from a year ago. That would put the seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) at 17.7 million, which is strong, but still down from 18.1 million a year ago.

TrueCar puts retail sales at 1.16 million and total sales at 1.36 million. That would produce a SAAR of 17.9 million.

DELOITTE SEES A DIGITAL HOLIDAY SEASON

More consumers than ever plan to shop for holiday gifts online this year, according to the 31st annual holiday spending survey by Deloitte. And digital is also going to play a bigger role when it comes to shopping in bricks-and-mortar stores.

Half (50%) of survey respondents plan to shop online for gifts, giving the Internet a bigger lead than ever over discount/value department stores (43%), which rank as the No. 2 destination for gift shopping. This rise in web traffic could bring retailers more cheer from their e-commerce sales. Survey respondents anticipate they'll spend 47% of their budget online— matching what they plan to spend at physical stores for the first time. In prior years, people planned to spend more in the stores. Fewer people surveyed plan to visit standalone "big box" retail stores, dropping from 63% to 59% this year; traditional malls fell slightly from 53% to 50%, and independent stores not in a mall dropped four percentage points to 38%.

"The way people shop online is having a profound impact on holiday spending this year," saidRod Sides, vice chairman, Deloitte LLP and U.S. retail, wholesale and distribution practice leader. "Retailers must cater to that digital mindset long before someone walks into a store.”

66% of respondents expect they'll be "webrooming," looking at items online before making a purchase in a store. 50% will take part in "showrooming" by going to a store to look for an item, then searching online for the best price and making their purchase there instead of the store. But the good news for retailers with physical stores is that 43% of holiday shoppers surveyed expect they will use retailers' "buy online, pick up in store" feature.
