Dear Member,
This is to inform you that the next World Wushu Championships will be held in Vietnam from the 8th to 15th December 2005.
The International Wushu Federation has stipulated that the new rules for Taolu competition will come into effect for this competition. This will mean that all events will be based on optional routines only. There will be no compulsory routine events for these World Championships.
The finer details will not be known until we receive formal information from the IWUF and the Organizing Committee. We will advise you of further details as they become available.
We will be conducting the Australian Selection trials, as far as possible, according to the AKWF Wushu Selection Policy. However, depending on the availability of the necessary information from IWUF, we may need to hold the trials later than specified in the Policy.
Best regards,
Han Jin Song

President Announces Additional Entry Criteria for Selection in the 2005 World Wushu Championships
AKWF President, Walt Missingham, today announced additional entry criteria for persons wishing to compete in the selection trials for the 2005 World Wushu Championships.
"All persons wishing to compete in the Selection Trials for the 2005 World Wushu Championships must have competed in an AKWF run or sanctioned National or State title in the twelve months preceding the 2005 Selection Trials".
The obvious choice to meet this condition would be to compete in the 2005National Titles being held in Sydney or the State Titles being held in Melbourne tentatively in October.
Walt commented that "this is a further progression in the evolution of our competition management and brings us into closer alignment with the selection processes of most other Olympic sports....I think it is important for athletes to carefully select the events they compete in to ensure that what they are doing can have some potential National or International benefit. I have been disturbed that there has been an attempt by some groups to falsely claim or imply that their events are in some way officially sanctioned when this is not the case. To rectify this, any athlete can now call 0415 993 399 and check if a particular competition is sanctioned or not".

Changes to the Victorian Branch Committee
It is with regret that we have had to accept Tang Lai Wei’s resignation from the Victorian Branch Committee. Tang could no longer participate in the activities of the committee and maintain his increased business workload. We would like to thank Tang for all his help and support and wish him well with his future ventures.
On a brighter note, we are very pleased to welcome Dana Wong as a new committee member. Dana has an enviable career in the martial arts, specialising in Shaolin Kung Fu. We hope that he will be able to make a dynamic contribution to the Victorian Branch and further the development of Kung Fu/Wushu in Victoria. If you have a chance, please thank Dana for accepting the committee’s invitation. We are sure Dana would be happy to hear from any members with feedback about the way the Victorian Branch can be better managed. Dana can be contacted on (03) 9731 1789 or
AKWF Member Insurance
You are all well aware of the new Insurance scheme that Walt Missingham has secured for AKWF members through QBE Insurance. Walt is continuing to work very hard to have the scheme up and running by 31st March, 2005. If any member has not been contacted by either Walt Missingham or a Victorian Branch Committee member, please contact the National Office as soon as possible on (02) 9571 8988 – we need details of your current insurance.
Don’t forget that you must be accredited to take advantage of the group insurance scheme. Check your accreditation now, and if necessary, book in to attend the NCAS course on 12th March, 2005.
If you have any questions or require any additional information please contact the National Office on (02) 9571 8988 or any of the Victorian Branch Committee members.

Your Expertise is Needed!!

If any Victorian members have skills in drafting proposals and submissions to corporations or Government bodies and would like to contribute to the development of Wushu in Victoria could you please contact Charles Tsui-Po on (03) 9796 1066 or
We are desperate for people who can give us a little bit of time putting together material for NOAS and VicSport submissions.
Our first official Championships held on 28th November 2004 went extremely well. We would like to thank all of those members who volunteered their time and effort to make it such a success. In addition, congratulations must go to all the athletes as the overall standard of competition was world class. Competition is always difficult as judges can only score on the performance on the day. We must accept this and learn from it. It may be worthwhile for all instructors to teach their athletes about the great many benefits to be gained from competition participation apart from medals – something we can all loose sight of from time to time.
The 2004 title holders are as follows -
National Titles:
National Wushu Champion (Adult Male) – Ben Tenniswood
National Wushu Champion (Adult Female) – Vivien Lee
National Tai Chi Champion (Adult Male) – Andre Van de Putt
National Tai Chi Champion (Adult Female) – Su Rule
National Wushu Champion (Youth Male) – Calvin Gan
National Wushu Champion (Youth Female) – Jayde Kirchert
National Tai Chi Champion (Youth Male) – Zac Hare

A Special Thank You to ANWTA
Many members would not be aware that the carpets used for Wushu are extremely expensive – certainly outside our inaugural Championships budget. We were very honoured that ANWTA offered to lend us their Championships carpet at no cost, to enable us to run our event. We would like to take this opportunity of thanking ANWTA and ANWTA members for their generosity and look forward to developing the relationship between our two organizations more closely in the future.

We are very pleased to announce that Melbourne will be hosting a Training Course for the New International Wushu Competition Rules.
This opportunity has been made possible through funding from the Australia China Council in response to a submission put together by David Crook – National Vice-President and Han Jin Song – Secretary-General Wushu. Without their determination, we would not have been in a position to host such an illustrious event.
Several experts from China will be flown in to conduct the course, with English translation, covering the technical, practical and theoretical aspects of the new rules.
The course is open to anyone: athletes who are preparing themselves for the World Championships, coaches who are training athletes for the World Championships, current International Judges who need to update their knowledge and skills, those who want to participate in an official capacity in future National or International events, or have an interest in what is happening with International competition are encouraged to attend
This training course will include the necessary theory components to fulfil the requirements of the National Officiating Accreditation Scheme (NOAS). Participants will be certified as Level 2. NOAS once the appropriate practical and theoretical assessments are also completed.
This will also be a great opportunity to meet with members from around the country as well as across the Tasman, to exchange ideas and look at how other people run their schools as well as their training programmes.
The course will run over four days from 19th to 22nd May, 2005, so make a note in your diaries. Detailed information will be posted on the AKWF website shortly.
If you require any additional information, or would like to assist with the preparations for this great event, please contact Han Jin Song on (03) 9889 9999 or
